Enhancing Livelihoods, Health, WASH, Agriculture & Education among underserved community in Kambata Zone, Central Ethiopia
Introduction
Access to adequate healthcare, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), Agriculture and education services remains a major challenge for many communities in developing countries, particularly in rural and underserved suburban areas. The lack of these essential services contributes to high rates of preventable diseases, maternal and child morbidity and mortality, and poor economic and health outcomes.
Strengthening these sectors through the collective efforts of communities, volunteers and donors is crucial to improving healthcare, education, and overall economic conditions. As a region in central Ethiopia, a developing country, Kambata Zone also faces significant challenges in healthcare, education, agricultural inputs and WASHES services.
In view of addressing these gaps, this project was initiated by a group of individuals originally from Kambata Zone, now residing in both the U.S. and Ethiopia. As a non-profit initiative, it aims to support local communities, with a particular focus on vulnerable children and women. The project seeks to alleviate the significant livelihood challenges faced by residents of Kambata Zone.
This initiative follows a phased approach, with the current phase focusing on improving healthcare access by constructing and strengthening the internal capacity of a pharmacy in Doyogena Woreda, a district in the western part of Kambata Zone. Subsequent phases will expand to other woredas based on a rapid assessment and committee decisions.
In Doyogena Woreda town, the project aims to construct and equip a pharmacy to ensure timely access to medical drugs and interventions, thereby enhancing overall community well-being.
While this initiative aims to address identified gaps across all woredas in Kambata Zone, the U.S. and Ethiopia teams have agreed to prioritize two key areas that require urgent intervention:
Constructing and Enhancing the Capacity of the Pharmacy in Doyogena Town – This initiative aims to build and strengthen the pharmacy’s ability to deliver critical medical drugs by addressing resource gaps and other needs identified by Doyogena Woreda authorities.
Strengthening Minatoffa School – Minatofa School, located in Dorogena District, has been selected for support due to its long-standing history in the community. Despite its established presence, the school has faced significant challenges in delivering quality education. The teaching and learning system has been severely impacted by inadequate internal facilities, which hinder both student learning and teacher effectiveness. This initiative aims to address these challenges by supporting capacity-building efforts at the school, with a focus on improving infrastructure, providing necessary educational resources, and enhancing teaching methodologies.
This targeted approach will lay the foundation for broader community development efforts in the future.
Overall goal of the initiative:
The overarching goal of this project is to enhance access to and improve the quality of health, education, and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services in underserved communities across the woredas of Kambata zone. By addressing critical gaps in these sectors, the project aims to strengthen local infrastructure, equip service providers with essential resources, and create a healthier and well-educated population. The specific objectives for the current initiate include:
Objectives of the initiative:
To construct and equip pharmacies in Doyogena Town, Kambata Zone, ensuring the availability of essential medicines/ medical drugs with a specific focus on improving maternal and child health services.
To enhance the learning environment at Minatoffa School in the Kambata Zone by providing essential educational resources, including computers, classroom furniture (desks), and additional learning materials.
Enhancing WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) services and community participation by installing or rehabilitating boreholes, hand pumps, spring development and piped water systems to ensure consistent access to safe and clean water. The initiative also includes upgrading school latrines, conducting hygiene awareness campaigns, and providing sanitary products for elementary school girls in targeted schools.
Hence it is aimed to provide community-based agricultural support to improving food security, increasing household income, and building resilience among local farmers. Details of these activities, such as chicken rearing, should be further explored by professionals in the agricultural sector.
Initiative Activities:
Conduct a Comprehensive Needs Assessment
Undertake an in-depth needs assessment in woredas at Kambata zone to identify and prioritize critical areas requiring immediate and planned intervention. This assessment should aim to pinpoint the most underserved and vulnerable sectors and geographic locations, with a special focus on health infrastructure, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), agriculture and education services. Utilize both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods, including surveys, interviews, and field observations, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the gaps and challenges affecting the community.
Engage Key Stakeholders and Local Actors
Foster meaningful collaboration by engaging key community stakeholders, local government authorities, and professionals from the health, education, Agriculture and WASH sectors. Facilitate participatory discussions to ensure that the actual problem of community members, local leaders, and service providers are captured in the needs identification process. This inclusive approach will help build community ownership and strengthen the relevance and sustainability of the interventions.
Develop and Share Rapid Assessment Reports
Prepare clear, evidence-based rapid assessment reports that summarize the findings, highlight priority areas, and outline critical gaps in health, WASH, agriculture and education infrastructure and services/ support. First share these reports with facilitating/ organizing teams in both the U.S. and Ethiopia and then with the local community, woreda authorities, to ensure alignment and informed decision-making.
Develop work plans and Intervention strategies
Based on the assessment findings and community discussions, develop a detailed, action-oriented work plan and intervention strategies. These plans should include clear objectives, timelines, resource allocation, and monitoring and evaluation (M&E) frameworks to track progress of implementation. Focus on sustainable, locally appropriate solutions that address the identified needs, strengthen existing infrastructure and services in health, WASH, agriculture and education sectors.
Strengthening Health, Education, Agriculture and WASH Sectors
In collaboration with the zonal and woreda government structure and relevant authorities from the health, education, Agriculture and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) sectors, the project will initiate and implement targeted activities designed to strengthen the capacity and infrastructure of institutions within these sectors.
For the education sector, the project will work to equip schools with essential teaching materials, computers, student desks, and other resources that foster a conducive learning environment. This effort aims to enhance both the quality of education and the overall learning experience for students.
In the health sector, the project will identify and fill existing gaps in healthcare facilities, such as hospitals, health centers, and health posts. Specific areas of intervention may include the provision of laboratory equipment, diagnostic tools, medical supplies, and other critical resources necessary for effective patient care and improved diagnostic capabilities. By addressing these shortages, the project seeks to strengthen the healthcare system's ability to deliver timely, efficient, and high-quality services.
Agriculture sector, Agriculture remains the primary source of livelihood for the majority of the rural population in the Kambatta zone, central Ethiopia. In light of this, the initiative aims to support smallholder farmers who face numerous challenges, including limited access to quality inputs and inadequate knowledge of modern, small-scale farming techniques. These constraints contribute to low productivity, food insecurity, and persistent poverty.
In the WASH sector, the project will prioritize the development and provision of sanitation and hygiene support to communities, aiming to improve access to clean water, enhance sanitation infrastructure, and promote hygienic practices. This may include the construction or rehabilitation of water points, spring development, the provision of sanitation materials, and community-level hygiene awareness campaigns to reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases.
By addressing these critical needs, the project assumed to achieving a sustainable and long-term impact on the overall well-being of communities, while also strengthening the capacity of local institutions to deliver essential services more effectively.
Expected Outcomes:
Reducing child and maternal mortality caused by a lack of medicine and diseases related to poor hygiene.
Increased school enrollment, retention, and attendance, especially for girls, through improved sanitation support provided by the project.
Improved availability and accessibility of safe and clean drinking water for communities, ensuring better health and well-being.
Enhance access to improved agricultural inputs and strengthen knowledge of small-scale farming techniques.
Target Beneficiaries:
Pregnant women and children
People with limited access to existing services.
Students and school communities
Budget Estimate:
The funding for this project will be sourced from multiple networks. It would be a continues funding campaign, such as Go-Fund-Me, will be launched in North America, Europe, and other parts of the glob to mobilize financial support. Additionally, a group of committed individuals both within Ethiopia and abroad will take responsibility for fundraising efforts through various means, including personal networks, and partnerships with organizations.
A detailed budget plan will be developed based on discussions with team members, taking into account the findings of a rapid assessment and the specific needs of each project site. This approach will ensure that funds are allocated effectively to maximize impact.
