We’ve won the Innovation Award 2026 at the Constructing Excellence in Wales (CEW) Awards 🎉
The award recognises the incredible progress being made on the Fairwater Community Campus, a brand new, state-of-the-art space that’s bringing three schools together in one place. With construction by BESL nearing completion, it’s exciting to see this project come to life as part of the Sustainable Communities for Learning programme with Welsh Government.
Cantonian High School has already opened and Woodlands High School and Riverbank School will be completed in September, offering fantastic new learning spaces, sports facilities and community areas, while also expanding support for pupils with Additional Learning Needs.
Fairwater Community Campus is a landmark development transforming education in Cardiff, bringing together Cantonian High School, Woodlands High School and Riverbank School on a single, state of the art site. While the schools share the campus, they operate as separate entities, each retaining its own identity, leadership and governing body to serve their distinct pupil cohorts. Cantonian High School provides mainstream secondary and post 16 education and Riverbank and Woodlands, as part of the Western Learning Federation, deliver specialist provision for pupils with Additional Learning Needs.

A new exhibition exploring childhood play in Cardiff from the 1930s to the 1950s opens at the Museum of Cardiff this summer – and there’s also a fun-packed programme of hands-on family-friendly activities to enjoy!

Ely Memory Lane (11 July – 31 October) combines oral histories, photographs, toys and a specially created video game to tell the story of how generations of children have played and grown up in Cardiff.

Alongside the exhibition, families can enjoy free Dinky Dragons sessions (10 July and 14 August), offering a full day of imaginative play, storytelling, rhyme time and crafts for younger children. Regular Crafty Wednesdays giving children the chance to design and make their own creations, with a new theme every week.

For younger visitors, the museum will also host the Lotta & Lola Museum Trail later in the summer – a free, interactive spotter trail where children explore the galleries through play-based challenges inspired by the characters from the book series by award-winning author and illustrator, Lauren Child.

As well as these activities, families can also pick up Explorer Packs and become “history detectives”, searching for clues and solving puzzles as they explore the museum.
