This is a deadline and we just didn't want anyone who may benefit to miss out. The government changed the number of years needed to get a full state pension and introduced this extended period of time for people to do gap fill from the typical 6 yrs.

Normally you are allowed to make up any missed national insurance contributions going back six years but until April 5, people who retired (or are due to retire) since April 2016 and are entitled to the new state pension can pay missed contributions dating back as far as the 2006-07 tax year — ten extra years of missed payments.

For a bit over £800 you could buy £5,500 of pension if you have gaps in your record. This is generally a really good use of savings for those who need more income in retirement and we know that many women fall into this bracket - don't miss the deadline.
