Companion planting isn’t just about making your borders look beautiful… it’s about helping your plants thrive.

One of my favourite combinations is and salvias.

Why?

The colourful flower spikes of salvia create a stunning contrast with shrub roses, but there’s a practical benefit too.
Salvia foliage contains aromatic compounds, including sulphur containing compounds, which can help create conditions that are less favourable for fungal problems such as powdery mildew.

Together they:
1) Create a beautiful cottage garden look
2) Attract bees and other pollinators
3) Add months of colour and texture
4) Help encourage healthier rose growth

Great garden design isn’t just about colour it’s about choosing plants that work together.

One of my favourites?

Lavender.

It’s a classic partner for roses, including beautiful David Austin roses, bringing that timeless cottage garden look while also offering plenty of practical benefits.
Lavender:

1) Attracts bees and other pollinators
2) Helps hide bare rose stems at ground level
3) Thrives in the same sunny, well-drained conditions
4) Extends colour, scent and interest through the season

The soft purple flower spikes contrast beautifully with the rounded blooms of roses, creating a combination that feels romantic, natural and full of life.

It’s as practical as it is beautiful.
