This morning brought some amazing news: my Ligérienne Unit has been awarded the Student category prize in Australian Wood Review’s Maker of the Year 2024 competition—an international celebration of fine woodworking and design.

The Ligérienne Unit is crafted from premium European oak and showcases a minimalist design that balances functionality with elegance. Its clean lines and thoughtful proportions make it a versatile piece for modern interiors, with an emphasis on high-quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship.

I’d like to thank Wood Review , the judging panel, and the sponsors for this incredible recognition. It’s an honour to have my work acknowledged among such talented makers from around the world.

Honoured to share that my Ligérienne Unit has been shortlisted in Wood Review ’s Top 100 Makers! The final award winners will be announced in their December issue (No. 125), and I’m delighted to be in the company of such talented makers.

Meet Wedge Designs

Born and raised in Nantes, alongside the mighty Loire, delicious Muscadet, and famous LU biscuits, Kevin Tronel has always been intrigued by woodworking. Love and life brought him to Paris, then Scotland, where he gained skills in business management, design, and marketing. His passion for Mid-Century Modern began after spotting iconic teak sideboards at a local auction.

After honing his craft at The Chippendale International School of Furniture, Kevin established Wedge Designs, where he brings a contemporary twist to the Mid-Century style he admires. His Verne Easy Chair recently won "Best Chair in Show" at the Young Furniture Makers Exhibition, and he was shortlisted by Australian Wood Review as one of the top 100 makers for his Ligérienne Unit.

Beyond furniture, Kevin enjoys cheering on FC Nantes and exploring Scotland with his wife and their Jack Russell, Angus.
