Travel Begins with Visualization - DARS FILMS 24/05/2026

During our recent trip to Golden Sands in Bulgaria, we received proof that travel is about visualisation.

This is why, when arriving at a hotel, we ask for a room with a view. This is why, when visiting a destination, we ask about sightseeing programmes, viewpoints, historical landmarks, sunsets, promenades, architecture, and landscapes. People travel not only to relax, but to experience emotions through what they see.

Destinations today compete not only through prices, flights, or hotel capacity. They compete through images, atmosphere, associations, and memories. Very often, the first impression of a place is formed visually long before the journey itself begins.

Golden Sands has enormous potential for visual storytelling. Its natural environment, beaches, green landscapes, sea views, and atmosphere create strong foundations for a modern international destination brand. At the same time, the visual identity and recognisability of the resort were largely built during the Soviet era, when Golden Sands became a dream destination for millions of people across Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union.

Today, one of the major challenges for the Bulgarian Black Sea resorts is their strong association with a short summer season. Bulgaria’s tourism industry has many highly experienced professionals who work successfully on operational challenges connected with extending the season.

But visualization can achieve something much bigger.

Visualization can strategically reposition destinations themselves.

Tourists should not travel only because of the temperature of the sea or the number of sunny days. They should travel because Bulgaria offers extraordinary cuisine, incredible wines, incomparable hospitality, Roman and Thracian heritage, rich biodiversity, mountain landscapes, traditions, spirituality, and cultural depth throughout the entire year.

A picture creates emotion. Emotion creates association. Association creates the desire to travel.

That is why we believe visualisation is needed not only for advertising campaigns. Visualisation is needed to reposition destinations.

How important is visual identity in shaping the future of destinations? We would be delighted to discuss this subject with tourism boards, cities, resorts, hotels, and destination marketing professionals worldwide.

The Power of Visualisation: The case of Zhetysu Region in Kazakhstan

Strong visual storytelling has the ability not only to promote destinations, but also to shape how regions are perceived, understood, and positioned — both internationally and domestically.

One of the most striking examples of this is our work on the campaign “Zhetysu – Towards the Sun.” When we filmed this project with DARS Films, our goal was straightforward: to strengthen the regional brand of what was then the Almaty Region of Kazakhstan and to highlight its unique identity, investment appeal, and tourism potential.

The campaign was produced as a national-scale advertising project, with versions created in Kazakh, Russian, and English, ensuring broad reach across domestic and international audiences. At the time, it was conceived as a regional branding initiative — not as a political or administrative statement.

Yet a few years after the campaign’s launch, history took an unexpected turn. In 2022, Kazakhstan officially established a new administrative unit — the Zhetysu Region, formed from part of the former Almaty Region. The historic name Zhetysu, meaning the Land of Seven Rivers, became not only a cultural and geographic reference, but the official name of a new region.

While advertising campaigns do not create administrative decisions, this case clearly demonstrates the long-term influence of visualisation and narrative. When a region is consistently and powerfully visualised — through images, stories, and values — it can help crystallise identity, strengthen recognition, and support strategic decisions over time.

The Zhetysu story is a reminder that visual communication is not decoration. It is a strategic tool — one that can influence perception, investment interest, tourism flows, and even how territories define themselves.

At DARS Films, we continue to believe that when storytelling is done thoughtfully and responsibly, it can shape the future of regions and countries.
