𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐕𝐂 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐈?

As per the OECD's latest data, a staggering 21% of global VC funds in 2020, around $75 billion, was channeled into AI. This marks a significant leap from just 4% or $3 billion in 2012.

In the last year alone, VC funding in AI surged by 20%. It's clear that AI leaders have successfully pitched their visionary ideas, shifting the VC landscape dramatically.

The OECD's comprehensive study delved into over 8,300 AI firms globally, examining 20,549 transactions from 2012 to 2020, with data from Preqin, a private capital markets analyst firm based in London.

Where is this investment flowing? The and are leading the pack, securing over 80% of the global AI VC funds. The EU, mainly and , follows with 4%, and the and each hold 3%.
Note, this only includes VC funding, excluding organic investments.

Focusing on the growth trends, US-based AI firms have steadily attracted investments, totaling $42 billion in 2020.

Chinese firms saw a surge in 2017 and 2018, though investments slowed down in 2019, reaching $17 billion in 2020.

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲-𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬, 𝟑 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐭 :

𝟏. 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐯𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 attracted $19 billion in 2020 alone, and a total of $95 billion from 2012-2020. The majority of these investments are in the US and China.

𝟐. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞, pharmaceutical, and biotech sector, boosted by the COVID-19 pandemic, drew in 16% of the total VC funds in 2020, doubling from $6 billion in 2019 to $12 billion.

𝟑. 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, services aiming at efficiency and automation, accounted for 11% of global investments in 2020.

The dominant position held by the United States and China in AI is expected to diminish somewhat. The crucial question remains: who will rise next? This shift will reveal not only the new geographical hubs of technological innovation but also the emerging leaders in the field.
