Over the past three months, I’ve had the privilege of being part of the Neer Peers programme at through the Social Transformation and Advocacy Through Research (STaR) project. This initiative, funded by Research England, aims to improve access and participation for global majority communities in postgraduate research.
As part of the programme, I joined a brilliant group of fellow PGRs to deliver training for undergraduate students from global majority backgrounds. Together, we created space to share resources, our journeys, and honest conversations, helping demystify postgraduate study and build confidence in their research potential.
This was especially meaningful to me, not just as a global majority researcher but as someone finalising a PhD that explores how adults bereaved by su***de can experience posttraumatic growth. My research focused on designing and evaluating a holistic, growth-orientated programme that centred on wellbeing, embodiment and meaning-making after traumatic loss. Despite growing awareness, su***de bereavement continues to receive limited attention in both academic discourse and mental health policy, particularly when it comes to perspectives from the global majority. My own identity as a global majority researcher adds an important layer to the urgency and relevance of this work.
Representation in academia isn’t just about who gets to study. It’s about whose stories, questions and communities shape the knowledge we produce. This experience reminded me why that matters so deeply.

On this International Women’s Day, I want to start by expressing my deepest gratitude to my incredible all-women PhD supervision team, who have been instrumental in guiding me through this journey. Their unwavering support, wisdom, and encouragement have helped me navigate the complexities of my PhD and beyond.
As someone bereaved by su***de, I never imagined I would have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to this space—one that remains deeply under-researched and burdened by stigma. Yet today, I am in the final stages of my PhD, dedicated to understanding posttraumatic growth following su***de bereavement. I look forward to sharing my research findings soon, with the hope that they will pave the way for better support systems.
Beyond academia, I am immensely grateful to be developing and delivering my postvention programme—designed to facilitate wellbeing and growth for those who have lost a loved one to su***de (link in bio).
There is still so much work to be done. Su***de loss survivors deserve more research, resources, and practical interventions. But today, I pause to acknowledge how far we have come—and to express my gratitude for being part of this change.

📚 Just entered the final stretch of my PhD journey! With 9 months to go, I’m diving into the task of writing up and reviewing my 80k-word thesis. The research phase is done – recruitment, data collection, and analysis are behind me, and now it’s all about laying low and putting pen to paper, reviewing and getting it done. 🖊️💻 It’s a monumental task, with its share of highs and lows, but daily runs are keeping me grounded and focused! 🏃♀️ Here’s to pacing myself through to submission day! 🎓💪 ***deBereavement

Hi, I’m Nima. I am a full-time PhD student in the School of Psychology, at the University of East London (UEL). As part of my studies, I am conducting research in the field of su***de bereavement and posttraumatic growth i.e., transformational growth following adversity, in su***de loss survivors. My study entails collaborating with adults who have lost a loved one to su***de, such as a family member, colleague or a dear friend, and to research this topical and important area of su***de postvention.
Thus far, in this field of su***de postvention, much focus has been on creating activities to prevent adverse behaviour in su***de loss survivors, with less emphasis on offering pathways to wellbeing and growth for survivors. Therefore, the aim of my research is to create and test interventions, known as positive postventions, that can facilitate wellbeing and growth in adults bereaved by su***de.
To participate in this research, you must meet the following criteria. You must be: (a) an adult aged 18 years or over; (b) bereaved by su***de for at least a minimum of 2 years; (c) currently feeling emotionally stable in your life; (d) not presently in treatment for any mental illness disorders; (e) not receiving any psychological or formal therapy, or due to begin this within the course of the study.
Recruiting participants for this research study is vital and deeply valued, as you will contribute to both evidence-based academic, and applied research contributions, within the fields of posttraumatic growth and su***de bereavement.
If you or someone you know is interested in participating in this research, please click the second link in the bio.
