Ageism Is Never In Style
Welcome to the official Ageism Is Never In Style® page. For all who agree that ageism in the Fashion Industry needs to go - once and for all.
It’s easy to expend energy on the past. To think about opportunities we didn’t take, different paths we could have chosen or moments we wish had unfolded differently.
But what really deserves our time, energy and attention is seizing what’s in front of us. And remembering it’s never too late.
So as we head into the weekend, this perspective from Sir Elton John feels like a worthwhile one to hold onto.
Whilst fame, wealth and celebrity undoubtedly bring privileges most people will never experience, the search for purpose, meaning and fulfilment is something we can all relate to.
Nor does success protect anyone from life’s challenges. One of the things we’ve always admired most about Elton John is his candour. Over the years, he’s spoken openly about addiction, recovery, childhood trauma and the work it took to rebuild his life. More recently, he’s shared the reality of living with significant vision loss and the changes that has brought.
And he has used his platform to help challenge barriers for LGBTQ+ communities for decades, encouraged many people to embrace who they are, and continues to share his passion and art through selected performances and creative collaborations.
Elton no longer tours globally, but we love this spontaneous moment in Ibiza in 2024 when he picked up a microphone during lunch and joined a singalong of Cold Heart (Pnau remix with Dua Lipa). One of those joyful, unscripted moments that brought people of different ages together through music - through seizing an opportunity.
One of the conversations we have most often in this community is about timing - worries and wishes around the assumption you had to sooner or that something’s been left too late.
Yet every day you share stories that challenge those assumptions.
Pivoting or launching businesses as second, or third careers. Discovering new or returning to creative passions. Finding confidence at a stage you never thought possible.
All of those stories begin in the same place: not by looking backwards, but by being curious about what comes next.

Every festival season, we celebrate the music, the atmosphere and the sense of community.
Yet we still seem surprisingly concerned with who is allowed to enjoy it.
Particularly when it comes to age.
Too often, society, the media and posts across social media treat people in midlife and beyond enjoying festivals, raves and live music as if they’re a novelty.
In the more “benign” examples, they’re patronisingly described as “inspiring” simply for being there. For dressing up, wearing glitter or dancing with no inhibitions. In others, they’re criticised as “cringe”, “trying too hard” or refusing to “act their age”.
But the discussion shouldn’t be about the fact they’re there in the first place.
It’s that society still acts as if they shouldn’t be.
The irony is that many of the people now being told they’re “too old” were there when festival culture was taking shape. Some danced through Woodstock and the Isle of Wight Festival.
Others came of age during punk, disco, acid house and the rise of rave culture.
They aren’t one homogenous group.
Many of the scenes, sounds and communities we celebrate today were shaped by the very - and different - generations now being collectively told to “act their age”
From many, festivals and raves aren’t anything new. And it’s something they’ve loved for decades and a culture they helped shape, and have never left.
Meanwhile some are returning. Others are discovering it for the first time. No matter how they arrived here, when they were born, or what stage of life they’re in, they belong.
Because culture, music, joy and connection doesn’t belong to one generation.
They all evolve because each generation adds to it, shares it and keeps it alive.
So if anything’s out of place, it’s the attitude that anyone over a certain age doesn’t belong there.
We’ve included stories and experiences from members of our community, including Cheerleader For Midlife Joy, Wellbeing + Adventure, and we’d love to hear yours too.
🎶 What’s your favourite festival memory? Are you a lifelong festival-goer, discovering them for the first time, or is there one still on your bucket list?

It’s linked to stronger social connections, improved wellbeing, reduced loneliness and a greater sense of purpose. It’s also linked to lower blood pressure, improved mental health and better overall wellbeing.
Some researchers even suggest it may be one of the most overlooked ways to support healthy ageing, with studies finding benefits that match, or even exceed, those seen with intensive nutrition or exercise programmes.
Yet despite the growing body of evidence, it rarely features in conversations about what helps us age well.
So what is it?
It’s not a supplement.
It’s not a fitness trend.
And it doesn’t cost a penny.
The answer? Volunteering.
And whilst most conversations about volunteering focus on the impact it has on the people, communities and causes being supported - rightly so - volunteering can be hugely meaningful and beneficial for volunteers too.
Take Julia Julia Williams whose story is featured in this carousel. As a volunteer walk leader for Ramble Worldwide Ramble Worldwide , she helped lead our special Lake District retreat celebrating Ramble Worldwide’s 80th anniversary and 10 years of Ageism Is Never In Style. And, as she shares, volunteering has become one of the most enriching part s of her life
Swipe to hear what Julia had to say, as well as discover more examples of how volunteering can support us as we age, and explore some simple ways to get started.
Because beyond the research, volunteering can offer something many of us are looking for throughout life: the opportunity to contribute, connect and feel part of something larger than ourselves. Continued purpose.
This is doing well by doing good ♥️
What has volunteering taught you, or what kind of volunteering would you love to try?
