Tomorrow marks International HPV Awareness Day.

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of over 200 viruses that are spread by skin-to-skin contact. Most of the time HPV doesn’t cause any problems but some types of HPV can increase the risk of cancer in the mouth and throat, cervix, va**na, bulbs, a**s, and p***s.

We can prevent HPV and reduce the risk of HPV-related cancer through increased awareness, HPV vaccination and cervical screening.

Further information about HPV and how to protect yourself and your loved ones can be found at the NHS conditions page by searching for HPV.

💜 March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Ovarian cancer is most common in women over 50, particularly those who have gone through menopause. However, it can also affect younger women.

If diagnosed at the earliest stage, 9 in 10 women will survive. But currently two thirds of women are diagnosed late, when the cancer is harder to treat.

The main four symptoms to be aware of are:

~ bloating
~ stomach pain
~ difficulty eating
~ needing to urinate more frequently

Other symptoms such as back pain, changes in bowel habits, extreme tiredness or unexplained weight-loss may also be ovarian cancer symptoms.

NHS Cervical Screening Programme providing digital results from September 2025

📲 From September 2025, the NHS Cervical Screening Programme will start sending results digitally via the NHS App. Patients with negative results will receive an NHS App message and notification. If the App message isn’t read within 72 hours, a letter will be sent. Abnormal results will continue to be delivered by post.

This change follows the successful rollout of digital invitations and reminders in June 2025, where since the launch, 9 out of every 10 invitations are being sent digitally, with the remainder being sent by post.

✅ Please download the NHS App and enable notifications on your smartphone

There are over 100 strains of HPV. Some of these are called high-risk as they may lead to certain cancers, including cervical, pe**le and a**l.

This is why the NHS offers the HPV vaccine to boys and girls from the age of 12-13.

Cancer screening is for people who do not have symptoms. Screening means testing people for early stages of a cancer, or for early changes that could develop into cancer if left untreated.

The UK has 3 core screening programmes; Bowel cancer screening, Breast cancer screening and Cervical screening, plus Lung cancer screening which is being rolled out in a phased approach. Eligible people will automatically be invited for screening if they are registered with a GP.
