It’s nearly midsummer, and if you’ve been watching the FIFA World Cup, you may have noticed players taking “hydration breaks.” Whatever the motivation, we’re here to celebrate seeing a high-profile, weather-related adjustment.
At Patchwork Hub, we believe in focusing on the barrier or need, rather than the condition. Whatever the weather, changes to temperature, barometric pressure, and humidity can seriously impact health and wellbeing. As climate change results in more extreme weather, considering weather-related adjustments in the workplace is becoming more important than ever.
There are plenty of low and no-cost ways to support yourself, colleagues, and friends:
• Changes to location: Even moving to a different spot in the room can help! The option to work from somewhere warmer, cooler, or drier has a huge impact.
• Personal heating/cooling items: No need to battle over aircon controls. Non-electrical solutions are available if sockets or safety are issues.
• Additional breaks: Useful for international athletes, but essential for anyone whose pain and energy levels are affected by the weather.
• Changes to working patterns: Flexible hours help with transport disruptions and allow people to avoid the hottest, coldest, brightest, or darkest parts of the day. You can also prioritize shifts according to need.
• Relaxed dress codes: This helps colleagues manage sensory needs, temperature regulation, and other health-related requirements more comfortably.
• Tailored leave policies: Show you are prepared to support parents and carers in case of school closures or health emergencies.
• Start the conversation: Simply ask how weather impacts people’s health.
Small changes like these can make a big difference.

Find us at 🥳

The team here at Patchwork Hub are delighted to be returning to Parallel Windsor on Sunday 5th July!

Parallel Windsor is a festival of inclusivity with challenge events for all ages, health conditions & abilities. This fantastic event, now in its tenth year, is held in the grounds of the majestic Windsor Great Park and is staged along the iconic Long Walk. It’s a great way to kick off Disability Pride Month, from the same amazing team that bring us Purple Sock Day and so many other initiatives.

We'll be exhibiting in the Community & Lifestyle area from 11 am, come rain or shine, hopefully shine 🌞

Come and find us - we’re looking forward to seeing (and meeting!) more members of our community!

If you want to get involved and secure your tickets for this fully accessible and inclusive celebration, visit this link to find out more: https://www.parallellifestyle.com/windsor2026

There is also the option to purchase a virtual entry ticket (all virtual entries receive a medal and a t-shirt) - so grab yours now!

It’s Carers Week this week. And it’s also the start of Pride Month.

Both matter - and for many people they aren’t separate conversations, even if workplace inclusion often treats them that way.
Too often, inclusion is built around single categories, but people’s lives don’t work like that and neither do the barriers they face. People are a patchwork of identities that mean they can find themselves facing barriers that compound, multiply and interact.

People can also find themselves pigeonholed by whatever characteristic is the most “visible” and may even find themselves excluded by the communities from which they most need support.

It’s time we all remembered the difference between “protected characteristic” and “single defining feature” - this will help us to fight stereotyping, prejudice and approaches to inclusion that force individuals to decide which of their needs they would like to be met. People shouldn’t have to choose between having their relationships respected or reasonable adjustments. We should be able to take pride in everything that we are, whoever we are and whoever we love.
At Patchwork Hub, we know people’s lives do not sit neatly in one box. Pride matters to our work because LGBTQIA+ people should not have to separate their identity, access needs, caring responsibilities or ambitions to be included. Good inclusion should make room for the whole person.
