Welcome to my
π₯ JUNE CARROT SERIES β Part 3:
Beating Carrot Fly! πͺ°
Carrot fly is the NUMBER ONE enemy of UK carrot growers. The larvae burrow into your carrots leaving brown tunnels. But don't worry β here's how to beat them π
π‘οΈ Best defences:
β’ Fine mesh/enviromesh over your bed β most effective method!
β’ 60cm high barrier around your carrot patch β carrot fly flies low to the ground
β’ Grow in raised beds or containers above 60cm β fly rarely reaches them
β’ Plant onions, leeks or chives alongside β the smell confuses the fly
β’ Choose resistant varieties like Flyaway or Resistafly
π‘ Good news: June sowings often MISS the first generation of carrot fly! That's another reason June is a great time to sow .
Golden rule: If you need to thin your carrots, do it in the evening and remove all thinnings straight away. The smell attracts the fly!

JUNE CARROT SERIES β Part 2:
πWATERING & THINNING π₯
Hey Fam π So Your carrot seeds are in the ground β now what?
Here's how to look after them ππ§ Watering:
β’ Keep soil consistently moist while seeds germinate (takes 14-21 days β be patient!)
β’ Once established, water deeply but less often
β’ Never let soil dry out then flood it β that causes splitting!
β’ In a dry spell, water every 2-3 daysβοΈ
πThinning:
β’ When seedlings are about 5cm tall, thin to 5-7cm apart
β’ Do this in the EVENING β crushed carrot leaves attract carrot fly during the day
β’ Water after thinning to settle soil around remaining plants
β’ Remove all thinnings from the plot β don't leave them lying around!Remember:
overcrowded carrots = thin, spindly carrots. Give them space to grow! πΏHow are your seedlings coming along? Drop a photo below! πΈπ

Hey Fam π
Welcome to my JUNE CARROT SERIES β Part 1
Great for first time carrot growers or for anybody who could use a few tips
INTRODUCTION & SOWINGπ₯
Did you know June is one of the BEST months to sow carrots here in UK ? The soil is warm, days are long, and you'll be harvesting from September! Here's how to get started ππ± Best varieties to sow now:
β’ Nantes 2 β sweet & reliable
β’ Autumn King β big, stores well
β’ Chantenay β great for heavier soils
β’ Flyaway β carrot fly resistant!πͺ΄
πHow to sow:
β’ Pick a sunny spot (6+ hours of sun)
β’ Rake soil fine β remove any stones
β’ Make a shallow drill about 1cm deep
β’ Sow seeds thinly β mix with sand to spread evenly
β’ Cover lightly and water with a fine rose
β’ Space rows 15-20cm apart
πTop tip: Sow a short row every 2-3 weeks for a continuous harvest! π‘Got heavy clay? Try raised beds or containers with compost and sharp sand for straighter carrots πͺWho's sowing carrots this week? ππ₯
