Christmas time for your dogs 🎄⛄
As we are getting closer to Christmas here is a few little things to think about for your dogs over this festive period:
- Not every dog loves the hustle and bustle of Christmas. Alot of dogs don't like how loud it is and how busy it can get so if you do have people coming round for Christmas make sure you have a safe space for them to go into to have a break from it all. Either a crate or separate room to go chill out in. Crates are really handy as this is a place they can go and they don't get annoyed or disturbed.
- If you have other dogs coming over (even if they have met before or have been a walk with them or have never met) another dog or dogs coming into their territory while your dog may already be overstimulated or highly aroused due to the atmosphere if it is has been busy or loud or kids running about and your dog has been getting hype it may not go the way you have planned. Either meet outside and go a quick walk round the street or have your dog in a crate first for others coming in if you feel it may get heated. Again Christmas can be overwhelming for the dogs so take extra care due to the circumstances of the day if it's out of the norm for your dogs.
- Advocate for your dog. If you know your dog doesn't like getting touched or too much attention then either say to your guests to leave him/her alone or if you think some family members won't listen pop your dog away for them coming in. No need putting them into a situation they aren't going to handle that well.
- With there being really nice smelling food around the house remember to keep chocolate/nuts etc out of reach. Also another thing to keep in mind is if you have other dogs round and there is food about that some dogs may resource guard so when eating putting the dogs away into crate/room or on leads so that no fights start because of this.
- If you are going to have people round and your dog is going to be having some crate time getting a nice long lasting natural chew to keep them occupied while in their safe space will be a nice touch for them.
- If you have kids and they obviously going to be well excited because it is Santa after all 🎅 😆 your dog may get over excited at certain points or stressed out because of all the noise and running about so if you see your dog getting either too overwhelmed or just over excited then letting them have some down time will help them.
- Taking your dog out for some exercise and some training/play before guests arrive is a good way to get some of that excess energy burnt and make them abit more tired for when you do have a busy household. This will also be beneficial if they are going in there crates for abit.
And most of all enjoy your day 😊
Advocate for your dogs and give them some own space and time to chill out this will make your day alot more smoother.
