Some of the best moments in the classroom happen when learning stops being a set of separate lessons and starts to feel inter-connected. But there is a big difference between a forced "themed curriculum" where everything gets blended into a blur, and a deliberate curriculum with strong subjects and clear, meaningful links. The biggest shift we can make is simply being more intentional about making those connections visible to the children. Simple, natural links can transform how children retain information:
Science + DT: Teaching rocks and soils in science, then reinforcing the concept of layers by baking layered cakes in DT.
Literacy + Science/DT: Writing instructional texts for a product they actually designed, or a scientific experiment they actually conducted. The quality sky-rockets because the purpose is real!
History + Math + DT: Designing a Roman city that draws on historical understanding, scale, shape, and teamwork.
The trick? We have to explicitly point out the connections. Saying simple things like, "Where else might this be useful?" helps children build a web of knowledge so they don't feel like they are starting from scratch every time the timetable changes.

✨ NEW BLOG POST ✨
"Make it engaging." 🥱
It’s the ultimate teaching directive, but how often do we confuse engagement with entertainment?
Real engagement isn’t about putting on a show or creating "edutainment" that looks good on the surface but lacks impact. It happens when learning has purpose, when pupils are thinking hard, collaborating, and genuinely invested in the outcome.
Whether it's turning the classroom into a courtroom for a history lesson, or using structured talk strategies so every child speaks, true engagement shifts pupils from passive listeners to active creators. Because as the saying goes: "You can't be what you can't see."

MONDAY MOTIVATION 🎯
This week, we're thinking about how thematic learning transforms the classroom. When subjects connect, pupils see the bigger picture. Geography isn't just maps. History isn't just dates. It's all woven together.
That's the power of a curriculum that connects.
What's your favourite thematic link you've discovered with your class?
