Baikal sponge is nor a plant neither an alga, as you might think, judging by its appearance, but it is one of the first multicellular animals on Earth - their ancestors appeared about 70 million years ago. They are silicic, composed of tiny glass needles, while we humans are organic creatures. They acquire their green color through symbiotic algae, but in a difficult time sponge can eat its organic comrades, and then it becomes white. The main function performed by the Baikal sponge is to filter water, purifying it of organic particles, including introduced by humans.
