I still stand by this, too many people paying Personal trainers to exercise and not train.

If your in the gym then i applaud you, but lets make that time count.

EXERCISE VS TRAINING

Training is thought out, specifically programmed, recorded and performed well enough will continue to push you further towards your goal and genetic limitations.

Exercise is random, exercise is working for that day’s short-term result, be it a sweat or a pump and lacks thought for long term results.

Sure random exercise will get you so far, if you’re new to working out your going to make changes within the first month easily, but try keeping that up for a year. Training isn’t a term for only sports men and women, I play no sports but when I’m in the gym it’s training, training towards a personal goal or a clients goal.

Areas to take into account:

Exercise selection and order
Rep ranges and number of sets
Rest times
Time spent in the gym
Recording of weights lifted
Food choices around training and throughout the rest of the day

The term “muscle confusion” gets thrown around a lot, this is the main argument you’re going to hear for a sporadic workout, yes your burning calories and getting what seems like a good workout from the sweat, pump and doms the following day but this means nothing for long term results, what I want to see is 1 more rep than last week, 5kg more on your deadlift than last month, or a circuit time cut down by a minute! Little victory’s weekly.

If the thought of squatting every week bores you but you want to get bigger and stronger than you really need to sort your attitude towards what its going to take to reach your goals. I will have clients perform the same lifts week after week, and miraculously they get stronger and more efficient weekly.

Don’t fall into the trap of exercise and definitely don’t pay a trainer to exercise! If you’re going to be in the gym for an hour why wouldn’t you want it to benefit you in the long term?

FRIDAY RANT

I will always offer a fully customized meal plan to any client as part of a training program, and i don't use the word customized loosely here, this is taking into account recent food diary macro nutrients, number of meals allowed daily by lifestyle, goals and any dietary needs e.g. vegetarian, pescatarian, food intolerance's etc.

As i sit here writing up one now for a client that has been with other trainers for a while i feel quite frankly annoyed about the whole situation, if your trainer has no interest in offering this out then:

A: They have no idea how to write a plan, in which case should be honest about it and refer you to someone else rather than copy some random plan of the internet or just tell you to eat "clean"

B: They should get their head in a book and educate themselves, if they have no interest in bettering themselves then ask yourselves what benefit can they offer you?

Barbell squats @ 100% bodyweight, Last man standing

Seated Barbell rack press working up to a 1rm

15kg Medicine ball throw

Chain lateral holds

possibly some carries depending how long it takes for everyone to get through the events, or if they have any energy left..
