Many of us will no doubt be enjoying barbeques on the island’s beaches throughout the summer season. So we’d like to share some advice for islanders on how to stay safe when cooking food on the beach, while remaining respectful to the local environment:

☀️ To safely extinguish a barbeque, embers and surrounding sand, douse them in water until they are cold. If the barbeque is disposed while still hot, bins can catch fire and cause harm to wildlife and other people.

☀️ Dispose of the cold remnants properly by either taking them home or by placing them carefully in a litter bin.

☀️ Barbeques can only be lit between 5pm and midnight on the island’s north and west coast beaches, excluding the Richmond end of Vazon.

☀️ They are not to be held on the South or East coasts, i.e. from Soldier’s Bay to Pleinmont.

☀️ They should be lit in a small fire bowl or bucket.

☀️ Permission is required for beach barbeques to be attended by more than 50 people. You can apply for permission here: gov.gg/BBQform

All your litter from a trip to the beach should be placed safely in the appropriate litter bin or taken home with you. Avoid taking glass as it is easily broken causing risk of injury to yourself and other beach users.

Please respect other beach users by following these steps – it helps keep Guernsey’s beaches as a safe and beautiful space for everyone to enjoy.

“Out on a shout”…. Two Guernsey Fire Appliances were turned out for two separate calls at the same time. This is a common sight… shoes left behind ready for the safe return of their owners.

Have a happy and safe Bank Holiday weekend 🚒🇬🇬😎☀️
