*LIVING WORD DEVOTIONAL*

*A NEW ATTITUDE*
*Scripture Reading:* 1 Peter 3:1-12
> _Not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing. *1 Peter 3:9*_
Our attitudes determine how far we go in life and how well we live our lives. The scriptures affirm that God has given us the power of choice. We have power over what we choose to do. Through the force of our will, our submission to God’s word and the moderating power of the Holy Spirit, we can respond to life positively. We can positively respond to negative things.
When you're insulted, you can waste your energy thinking of ways to revenge, or you can choose the alternative - you can forgive and move on with your life. You can be like your Heavenly Father, or you can be like the devil.
When people provoke us with wrong actions, we can exercise two options. We can either respond in the same way as their provocation or allow the Holy Spirit to inspire a righteous response from us.
Your boss may try to bully you, or sabotage your success, or take the credit for work you've done, and you may be tempted to try to get at him by doing the bare minimum. I have seen many employees who are so resentful of their employers that they have go to great lengths to calculate the very least they have to do. They allow their resentment to limit the expression of their potential and kill their spirit of excellence.
Even if the company you work for appears oppressive and insensitive, you must choose to go the extra mile. Go out of your way to treat everybody with kindness. If they are mean and resentful, you smile and pray for them. If they demand an extra hour, try giving them two. Do it with the spirit of joy and generosity of heart. If they try to break your spirit, just trust the Holy Spirit to give you the strength to remain firm. You may not be able to change them, but you must never allow them to change you to become like them.
Don’t just respond to people’s actions against you in the same way as they acted. You are different. Choose your actions. Exercise the force of your will. Yield your mind to God’s will. Allow the Holy Spirit to moderate your actions.
*Prayer:* _Heavenly Father, I want to live as Christ did. Give me the grace to overcome evil with good. *Amen.*_

LIVING WORD DEVOTIONAL

GOD KEEPS HIS COVENANT
Scripture Reading: Deuteronomy 7:1-11
> _Therefore know that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments._ Deuteronomy 7:9
This is part of Moses’ instructions to Israel as he neared the end of his life. He had observed how easily Israel forgot the Lord's faithfulness when they got into trouble. Moses was aware of the challenges that the nation would face as they entered their Promised Land. He wanted them to always remember God’s faithfulness.
The message Moses gave to Israel is relevant for us today.
Too often, Christians think that being children of God makes them immune to the attacks of the devil or that the storms of life would just bypass them. Exactly the opposite is true. I have seen people who turn their backs on God and walk out of the church because God didn’t stop the storm from coming against them.
Surely, the storms of life will come. They will often come when you least expect them. That makes them a better test of your faith. We would all like it if the troubles that we face were known before they happened so that we could plan better, but that’s not faith. God wants to see how you will react in times of trouble. Will you react in faith and trust, or doubt and fear? When the enemy comes in like a flood against you, where will you turn to?
The reality of our walk with the Lord is that He never abandons us even when we feel abandoned. The God on the mountain is still God in the valley. When things go wrong, He will make them right. The God of the good times is still God in the bad times. The God of the daytime is still God in the nighttime. Thank God, He’s still God in all circumstances – and nothing is too hard for Him!
Thank God for his faithfulness! Thank God for His promise to never leave us! Thank God for His power to heal, to bless, to forgive and to wash us from all sin! Thank God for supplying our every need! Thank God for his love, His mercy and goodness.
Prayer: _Heavenly Father, you are a covenant keeper. I thank you Lord that in all situations you remain faithful. In Jesus’ name, Amen._
