It was Christmas Eve, but in the couple's small house, the atmosphere was far from festive. The wife, María, tried to remain calm while wrapping her son in an old blanket. The pantry was empty, and everyone's stomach was growling. Her husband, Joaquín, promised to go out and return with something for dinner, even if it was only crumbs.
Joaquín walked through empty streets, knocking on doors and searching through garbage cans to no avail. The cold was cruel, and his breath clouded the air. Finally, in an abandoned alley, he found two hardened bolillos (bread rolls). "This will be better than nothing," he thought, although guilt gnawed at him.
He stopped for a moment, staring at the ground, when he heard a strange noise: a low growl that seemed to be coming from a dark corner.
Looking up, he saw an old dog, with dirty, scruffy fur, tied to a pipe next to a pile of trash. Its eyes were a disturbing red, but they also held a deep sadness. The dog was growling fiercely, as if it wanted to protect something, but at the same time it seemed to be crying out for help. Joaquín clutched the balls to his chest and slowly moved away, but then he heard a clear, guttural sound that made him stop:
"Let me go, please!"
He turned around abruptly, his heart pounding. The dog stared at him, motionless, but when it noticed Joaquín watching it, it began to bark, as if trying to hide what had just happened. Joaquín shook his head, muttering to himself:
"It's hunger, I'm imagining things."
He quickened his pace, but remorse wouldn't let him move. "What if it really needs help?" he thought. Finally, he decided to return. Trembling with fear, he approached the dog. It stopped growling and looked at him with something that almost seemed like relief. Joaquín swallowed and, with trembling hands, untied the rope that kept it tied up.
The dog, now free, began to move energetically, spinning in circles and barking excitedly. Then, it ran a few meters, stopping to look at Joaquín, as if inviting him to follow. Joaquín hesitated, but seeing the animal wagging its tail insistently, he decided to walk behind it.
The dog led him through dark alleys to an abandoned house at the end of a dead-end street. Without hesitation, the animal slipped through a broken window and disappeared inside. Joaquín stayed outside, unsure of what to do, but the dog peeked out again, barking softly, as if asking him to come in.
Finally, Joaquín plucked up his courage and crossed the threshold of the house. Inside, he found a small pile of food: fresh bread, cans of preserves, and even a couple of pieces of fruit in good condition. The dog sat next to the food, looking at him with its reddish eyes, and barked once, as if approving of his taking it. Joaquín, unable to believe it, filled his arms with everything he could carry. Before leaving, he looked at the dog, but it simply sat, silently watching.
Joaquín carried everything he could and ran back home. When he arrived, he found his wife and son waiting for him with tears of relief. Together, they shared a dinner like never before. However, that night, while the boy slept, Joaquín heard something outside. A low growl, followed by a murmur that stopped him in his tracks:
"Whenever you need it, come back for me."
Peeking out the window, he saw nothing. Only a trail of footprints leading into the darkness.
From then on, whenever someone told him about the unexpected kindness of animals, Joaquín remained silent, wondering if that night he had been helped by something more than a simple dog.
