'THE SCIENCE BEHIND...?'

There's a lot of talk today about the science behind projects, propositions, theories, and ideas.
Sometimes we are inclined to forget that science is a work in progress.
It’s not absolute.

Many things, once considered 'scientifically proven' or presented as 'scientifically approved', have since been dismissed.

Two nutritional examples would be the 'low-fat diet', promoted in the sixties by scientific bodies as a sure way to lose weight and become healthier.
America adopted the plan, multiplied its ingestion of sugars and starches, and got fatter by the minute.
Obesity is now a huge problem there, as it is becoming in Ireland, as a direct result of the high intake of sugars and starches, along with the excessive amounts of fat eaten as well.
The other example is where it was advised by Dieticians and Medical people alike that ingesting food that contained cholesterol was a huge contributor to heart disease. People were advised to keep eggs, for instance, to one or two a month.

Now, even the Irish Heart Foundation advises us that up to one egg every day is fine for a healthy population.

The emergence of the truth about both of these instances is now widely acknowledged, though sadly, not as widely practised.
The consequence of the high-carbohydrate, fat-indiscriminate, nutrient-poor diet consumed in the Western World is now claimed by the World Health Organisation to be responsible for over 70% of modern disease.

Not everything can be fully explained.
But just because we don’t understand how it comes about doesn’t mean it isn’t true.
And that's one reason why we may look twice when a piece of marketing, disguised as altruistic advice, righteously presents its product or service with the term 'the science behind' as a good reason to rush out and buy.

Think twice. Ask for examples or instances of proof for a claimed fact.

SO, WHAT DO YOU WANT?

A lot of us spend time worrying, yes, worrying, about what we haven’t got, don’t we?
However, a quick check can show us that we may be better off than we’d thought.
We see what we DO have.
We may think that we’re not doing too badly.

A good few years ago, I had a couple of days during which I thought I was going to get very bad news.
I believe I lived more intensely in those few days than I had in the previous ten years.

Things I took for granted became very precious. I had two legs, two arms and hands, personal energy and ideas and chances in which to use them, a halfway reasonable brain, and if I got through this crisis of uncertainty, I would be sure to make the most of these attributes and any others I might have.

In those 60-70 hours, I became more grateful for what had cost me nothing, and no money could buy.

As an exercise in gratitude, I now remind myself, frequently, of how fortunate I am to be in good health, have my faculties in order, and have some wonderful people whom I hold near and very dear in my life.
It’s a simple exercise.
I remind myself of the uncertainty, the fear, and the dread of impending loss. And then realise that it has passed.
It's over.
Done with.

Sometimes, our priorities can get bent out of shape by outside influences and what we see and hear around us.
There are few things as effective as a good old-fashioned fright to put life and its values back in perspective.
It puts manners on any of us.
Doesn't it?

Dealing With Life.

Focus.
What are you looking at?

When we focus on a problem WITH THE INTENTION of finding a solution, life works well.
That way of thinking asks the mind to search for a solution, and that is what the mind does; it becomes creative and searches.
Because the mind works to solve problems, it is ready to consider anything.
It goes into the area of possibility, disregarding so-called rules and conventions.
It opens up to whatever may be available. It latches onto anything that might help us. The Reticular Activating System kicks in, and we begin to see all kinds of openings.
We make discoveries.

Think of a time when you thought you had an unsolvable problem. You had a sleepless night or two, a feeling of being overwhelmed, maybe helpless, even lost.

But then a vague possibility came into view on a far horizon.
It opened your mind to the fact that maybe, just maybe, there was a solution, some way to overcome, skirt around, make a tiny difference that might solve your problem.
So you considered it.

And while you were considering, the thought developed into an idea, it became a hope, then transformed into a belief, that there was a way to survive this crisis.
You didn’t know yet how it would come about, but your belief was established, and the fact that there was a solution somewhere, it didn’t matter where, that the task was doable, was enough to free your mind from the limitations of fear, doubt, and uncertainty.

You were liberated. You became more creative, more daring. Restriction and limitation fell away, and all kinds of possibilities began to come into view and make themselves available.

And then you saw the way through. Because of the change in perspective, you put the possible to work, set it into action and found that as you applied it, you discovered qualities you didn’t know you had.
Revelations minimised the problem, magnified your abilities and advantages, which you discovered as you followed your instinct. Then you ran as hard as you could with every ounce of courage and determination you could muster.

You stuck to your task.

And when the doubts, uncertainties and fears tried to raise their heads and pull you up, you cut them off.
And you finished the task.
And solved the problem.
Because that’s what life is, a series of problems, decisions, responses and actions.

It isn’t about what happens to us.
It’s about how we respond to what happens to us, decide what to do about it, and then determine that decision to its natural and useful conclusion.

So remember, consider your options, search them well, keep your mind open, make your choice, and dive in.
