THE ANT AND THE GRASSHOPPER

In a vibrant, green forest tucked away near the base of a great mountain range, summer had arrived in full splendor. The days were long, warm, and bathed in golden sunshine. In this meadow lived a Carefree Grasshopper who spent his hours doing exactly what he loved most: hopping from blade to blade, chirping merrily, and strumming his fiddle under the shade of a large daisy. He had not a single worry in the world. One hot afternoon, while the Grasshopper was resting, he noticed a tiny Worker Ant marching past. The Ant was small, but he was carrying a massive grain of wheat balanced carefully on his back. He was sweating profusely and breathing heavily under the weight."Hey there, friend!" the Grasshopper called out lazily. "Why are you toiling and moiling away on such a beautiful day? Put down that heavy load, come sit in the shade, and listen to the happy song I just composed!"The Ant stopped for just a brief second to wipe the sweat from his brow, but he kept his firm grip on the grain. "I am helping to lay up food for the winter," the Ant explained seriously, "and I highly recommend that you do the exact same thing. The cold season will be here before you know it."The Grasshopper laughed out loud, his belly shaking. "Why bother about winter right now?" he giggled, gesturing to the bushes overflowing with sweet berries and fields of lush green grass. "We have plenty of food at present! Winter is months away. You worry far too much."The Ant did not argue, knowing that words would not fill his underground larder. He simply picked up his pace and continued his tiring journey back to the anthill. All through the summer, this cycle repeated. Day after day, the Ant and his family gathered corn, seeds, and wheat, packing their tunnels tight and lining the walls with dry grass to keep out the chill. Meanwhile, the Grasshopper ate until he grew fat, sang to anyone who would listen, and danced the sunny afternoons away.Eventually, the autumn leaves turned from green to brilliant gold, and then fell to the damp earth. The warm summer breezes shifted into a piercing, freezing wind. Then, winter arrived all at once.A thick, white blanket of snow covered the entire meadow. The streams froze into solid ice, the berry bushes withered into bare twigs, and every single green leaf vanished beneath the frost. The Grasshopper woke up one morning shivering violently, his thin summer wings completely useless against the bitter cold. Worse than the freezing cold was the hollow ache in his stomach. He was absolutely starving. He dragged himself across the frozen field, desperately kicking at the snow, but there was zero food to be found.Weak and desperate, the Grasshopper remembered his industrious neighbor. He made his way to the anthill and knocked weakly on the small wooden door. When the Ant opened the door, a wave of warmth rushed out, smelling of toasted seeds and sweet grain. Inside, the ants were cozy, safe, and happily distributing food from their massive summer stores."Please, kind Ant," the Grasshopper begged, his teeth chattering uncontrollably. "I am half-perished with hunger and freezing to death. Will you please share a small morsel of your grain to save my life?"The Ant looked at the shivering musician with a heavy sigh. "Tell me, Grasshopper, what were you doing all last summer while we spent our days working from dawn until dusk?"The Grasshopper looked down at his feet in deep shame. "I didn't have time to store up any food," he whined softly. "I was so busy making music and enjoying the sunshine that before I knew it, the summer was gone."The Ant shook his head in disappointment. "Ah, so you sang all summer, did you?" the Ant replied. "Very well. Since you were a musician then, you may dance through the winter to keep yourself warm!"With that, the ants turned their backs, closed their granary doors, and left the careless Grasshopper out in the cold to face the consequences of his idleness.
