A cardinal buoy indicates the safest water around a danger, based on the four cardinal directions — North, East, South, and West — relative to the hazard.

Each buoy tells mariners where the safe water lies (e.g., to the north of the buoy for a north cardinal).

• To guide ships safely by showing which side to pass on.
