A galaxy is a vast collection of stars, planets, gas, dust, and dark matter, all bound together by gravity. Our home, the Milky Way, is just one of billions of galaxies scattered across the universe.

Each galaxy is like a city of stars — some contain just a few million stars, while giant ones hold trillions. They come in many shapes: spiral like pinwheels, elliptical like smooth balls, or irregular like cosmic clouds.

Galaxies are born from clouds of gas and dust that slowly come together over billions of years. Within them, stars are born, live their brilliant lives, and die in explosions that spread elements for new stars and planets.

When we look at the night sky, every tiny speck of light could be a distant star or even an entire galaxy millions of light-years away. Galaxies remind us how small we are — and how vast the universe is.

To gaze at a galaxy is to dream of other worlds and endless possibilities. They are proof that the universe is alive, ever-changing, and filled with mysteries yet to be discovered.

🌌 Educational Note: Understanding Space

Space is the vast, seemingly endless expanse that exists beyond Earth’s atmosphere. It contains everything — planets, stars, moons, asteroids, comets, and galaxies.

Key Points:

The Universe: It is everything that exists — scientists believe it began about 13.8 billion years ago with the Big Bang.

Solar System: Our solar system has the Sun at its center, with eight planets orbiting it — including Earth.

Stars: Stars are huge balls of burning gas that produce heat and light. Our Sun is a star!

Galaxies: A galaxy is a massive group of stars, gas, and dust held together by gravity. Our galaxy is called the Milky Way.

Space Exploration: Humans have sent rockets, satellites, and space probes to explore space. Astronauts visit space in spacecraft to conduct research and learn more about the universe.

Why Learn About Space?
Learning about space helps us understand Earth’s place in the universe, inspires new technology, and might one day help humans live on other planets.

✨ Space reminds us how small we are — and how big our dreams can be!

NASA, Northrop Grumman Test Fire SLS BOLE Booster
NASA ID: 2_minutes_of_dm-1_test_feed (1080p)
This video shows teams from NASA and Northrop Grumman fire a ground-based version of a booster for the agency’s SLS (Space Launch System) rocket June 26. Secured horizontally in a test stand at Northrop Grumman’s test facility in Promontory, Utah, the single five-segment booster motor fired for more than two minutes and produced 3.9 million pounds of thrust. The booster for this test, known as Demonstration Motor-1 (DM-1), is the result of the Booster Obsolescence Life Extension (BOLE) project. This test was the first full-scale ground test of a new five-segment solid rocket motor.
During the test, there was an abnormal event approximately 15 seconds before the end of the motor firing. Despite this event, NASA achieved several of the test’s primary objectives and received valuable data on technical risks identified ahead of the test. Testing this evolved booster for the SLS will help evaluate improvements and new materials in the boosters. The BOLE effort was launched to transition to a more efficient, lower cost commercial solution for the boosters for the SLS rocket. Through the Artemis campaign, NASA will send astronauts to explore the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and to build the foundation for the first crewed missions to Mars – for the benefit of all.
