The lore of Khamba and Thoibi is the most popular of all the folk tales of Manipur, whose ballads in the local
folk songs are loved by each and every Manipuri, young and old.

Our own Romeo and Juliet, with even a similar culmination of the story in the unison of the two lovers only in spirit, after the tragic end of their lives. But of course the story is entirely different and nothing short of an epic love story.

Here I have depicted , the beautiful daughter of the Chieftain of Moirang, boating in the famous Loktak lake of Manipur where she lovingly gathers the best of lotuses for her sweetheart , the orphaned son of a brave warrior of great repute but whom the strong and brave youth never got to know.

Gently she makes her way amongst the Phumdis to meet her soulmate who lie in wait for her at a secret rendezvous. The romance of the two beautiful souls in the backdrop of the pristine Loktak lake enthrals every beating heart 💗.

‘Shamadon Ayanba’ which translates as ‘the swiftest amongst beasts’ is a powerful mythological creature, ballads of which are sung in the Meitei folklore. The Meitei mythology has it that when the Almighty Sidabamapu anointed Ibudhou Pakhangna as the deity of the humans, his elder brother Ibudhou Sanamahi was furious with rage and in order to exact revenge for losing his birthright to his younger sibling who outsmarted him, he created a powerful beast with wings to descend to earth and trample it under it’s hooves. But the wily and powerful Ibudhou Pakhangna, with the help of nine Goddesses, trapped and wrangled the beast, cutting off it’s wings and mane, thus taming it. Later, it became the stead of Ibudhou Marjing, the God of War and sentinel of the four directions. An epitome of power, grace and elegance, it roamed the four directions guarding Kangleipak. Thus descended from this powerful creature, the agile ponies of Manipur, so it is believed and written in the Kangjeirol.
