BCI Seeks Details on Mamata Banerjeeโ€™s Advocate Status After Appearance in Calcutta High Court

New Delhi, May 14: The Bar Council of India (BCI) has sought detailed information from the State Bar Council of West Bengal regarding the enrolment and practice status of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after reports emerged that she appeared before the Calcutta High Court wearing advocateโ€™s robes and white bands.
In an official communication dated May 14, 2026, the BCI directed the West Bengal Bar Council to verify and furnish factual details about Mamata Banerjeeโ€™s enrolment as an advocate, if any, and whether her name currently continues on the State Roll of Advocates. The direction follows media reports claiming that Banerjee appeared in legal attire before the High Court.
The BCI clarified that its inquiry is limited to verification of records and that it is not expressing any opinion at this stage regarding the permissibility of such appearance. Referring to the Bar Council of India Rules governing professional conduct and dress code for advocates, the Council noted that legal attire, including bands and gowns, is prescribed for advocates appearing before courts and tribunals.
The Bar Council has asked the State Bar Council of West Bengal to furnish, by May 16, 2026, details including Mamata Banerjeeโ€™s enrolment number, date of enrolment, present status on the State Roll of Advocates, and whether she had intimated any voluntary suspension or cessation of legal practice during her tenure as Chief Minister from 2011 to 2026.
