There’s a quote I think about often. It says that your life will come to an end on an ordinary day, in the middle of unfinished plans. And the world, beautiful and indifferent, will keep moving. I love that quote for how true that is, yet how forgetful we all are of it.

I turned 40 last year. And if you ask me where the twenty years between college and now went, I genuinely don’t know. They seem to have passed in a blur of work, friendships, heartbreaks, laughter, responsibilities, flights, deadlines, family dinners and ordinary Tuesdays. And perhaps that’s the point.

Life is not made up of the big moments we keep waiting for. It is happening now. In the coffee you’re drinking. The holiday you’re postponing. The message you’re meaning to send. The apology you’re holding back. The person you love but haven’t told lately.

The trouble is that we live as though time is guaranteed. As though there will always be another summer, another opportunity, another conversation. But none of us really knows that.

So buy the flowers. Take the trip. Wear the dress. Forgive where you can. Say thank you more often. Hold the people you love a little longer. Not because life is short, though it is. But because life is happening right now, and it would be a shame to miss it while waiting for later.
