Today reminded me why I chose this profession.

A 22-year-old boy came to me for a retina opinion. He had lost his left eye in childhood due to trauma. Now, after another injury with a wooden stick, his only seeing eye had vision of counting fingers. On examination, he had an inferior retinal detachment with a large break.

I advised for surgery. But he belonged to a poor family and could not afford the procedure.

As a newly joined retina surgeon in a corporate multi-speciality hospital, it was not an easy decision. Yet in front of me was a one-eyed young boy at risk of total blindness. I simply could not let that happen.

We went ahead with a 2-hour scleral buckle surgery.

Today, 15 days later, the retina is attached and his vision has improved to 6/60.

The satisfaction I felt is beyond words.

At LV Prasad Eye Institute, I was not only trained in surgical skills I was taught compassion. My mentor, Padmaja Kumari Rani, didn’t just teach me how to operate; she taught me how to care.

This is what I can give back to society.
