For seven years, a Key West man kept a secret inside his home—until one open window exposed everything.
In 1940, unsettling rumors began spreading through Key West, Florida, about Carl Tanzler, a radiology technician who had once cared for a young tuberculosis patient named Maria Elena Milagro de Hoyos.
Elena had died in 1931, but Tanzler’s obsession did not end with her passing.
After hearing disturbing reports from neighbors, Elena’s sister confronted him. Inside his home, she discovered that Tanzler had secretly removed Elena’s remains from the cemetery years earlier and attempted to preserve them using homemade materials.
Authorities arrested him for unlawfully disturbing the grave and removing the body. However, the case was eventually dismissed because too much time had passed under the statute of limitations.
After his release, Tanzler created a life-size figure resembling Elena and reportedly kept it in his home until his death in 1952.
The case remains one of the strangest and most unsettling chapters in Florida history—a story of grief, obsession, and a secret hidden for years.
Do you think this case reflects extreme grief, dangerous obsession, or something even more disturbing?
