Villa Borsani, designed by Osvaldo Borsani between 1943 and 1945 in Varedo, stands as one of the most refined expressions of Italian Modernism applied to domestic architecture. The project embodies a synthesis of industry, craftsmanship, and spatial research, translating the productive culture of Brianza into an integrated system where architecture, interiors, and furniture operate as a unified design language.

The villa’s spatial layout unfolds through a fluid sequence of interconnected rooms arranged across split levels, drawing inspiration from the principles of the Central European Raumplan. Rational volumes, articulated circulation paths, and the continuity between interior and exterior spaces generate a dynamic architectural experience in which built-in elements — niches, storage systems, technical fittings, and custom furniture — become intrinsic components of the architecture itself, anticipating a contemporary approach to interior design.

To this day, Villa Borsani preserves an extraordinary collection of original furnishings and site-specific artistic interventions by figures such as Lucio Fontana, Arnaldo Pomodoro, and Agenore Fabbri. Alcova’s recent decision to activate the villa during Milan Design Week has renewed attention toward this iconic residence, reaffirming its role as a landmark of experimental design, Italian manufacturing culture, and architectural innovation.

With Ziqqurat, Driade reinterpret the storage cabinet in an experimental way, starting from the traditional sideboard structure and transforming it into a visually complex and unconventional object.

The project is based on a modular cladding system with geometric patterns inspired by the iconic striped composition of Daniel Buren, generating a dynamic visual effect that appears random but is in fact governed by a precise underlying design logic. The result is a piece that combines function and visual research, where the structure of the cabinet is redefined through the language of pattern and perception.

Produced in 2024, Ziqqurat embodies the encounter between Driade, a historic Italian design brand known for its experimental approach, and Daniel Buren, an internationally acclaimed artist, marking a significant collaboration between the worlds of collectible design and contemporary art.
