Documenting SIRENS – FOLLOW THE WATER, FOLLOW THE SOUND was a challenging yet rewarding experience. Evoking a song through a photograph is not easy, especially when it emanates from a loudspeaker in a complex acoustic environment. Needless to say, the hint was hidden in the water, it just took few steps back and some time to listen to what the Giudecca Canal had to say.

We have followed the development of Shifting Sands: A Battle Song from the very beginning. It has been an amazing journey, and the press kit shooting was a thrilling experience.

Manal AlDowayan is representing Saudi Arabia at the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia with a multimedia installation titled Shifting Sands: A Battle Song.

In this work, where she explores sound as a medium for the first time, AlDowayan combines the sonic and geological elements of the desert with the voices and energy of Saudi women, reflecting a time of profound cultural transformation.
