𝗭𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘇𝗵𝗼𝘂 𝗟𝗶𝘂𝘇𝗵𝘂𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺 | by 𝗛𝗬𝗣-𝗔𝗥𝗖𝗛 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗨𝗟𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗦

HYP-ARCH CONSULTANTS: China’s urban development has undergone great changes over the past 40 years since the reform and opening up. Located to the south of the intersection of Huayuan Road and Lian-Huo Expressway, LiuZhuang is near the North Passenger Station and used to be the northernmost urban village of the north ring of Zhengzhou. This place has attracted nearly 300,000 “people who come to work and live in Zhengzhou” for the urban construction of Zhengzhou, where countless people meet and then go their separate ways. Since the demolition began around 2016, tremendous changes have taken place here.

The project aims to develop an urban development museum for this region, and this period of history is the gene that is unique to this region. Our design hopes to record and interpret the story in a new architectural form in line with the times.

The project site is a “non-standard” strip of land 29 meters wide and 115 meters long, which is different from the shape of general urban public building land. During the implementation of the scheme, we find that such a narrow strip of land points to the north and south, and the linear ends of the north and south point to the old town and the new town of Zhengzhou. The special shape gives the site a historical coincidence, so we want to show respect for the property of the site in the design. We make the north-south linear space with a node in the middle, and this node is the development of the times. This is where urban development meets prosperity, which we call the “node of the times”.

Space + Architecture: At the outset of the design process, the young couple, both working remotely from home, approached the project with a refreshingly open mindset. Rather than bringing a predetermined vision or detailed brief, they entrusted the design team with a blank canvas, allowing ideas to emerge organically through conversation and shared imagination. Their only clear desire was for the house to serve as a holistic space: a place that supports both their daily work routines and their evolving lifestyle as a growing family.

Beyond their work life, both are passionate about nature and often explore Vietnam’s winding roads together. As they anticipated the arrival of a new family member, the idea of a true home - one to return to - became more urgent and meaningful. They led us down a narrow alley in crowded Thu Duc City, Vietnam, where we found a peaceful, sunlit plot free from city noise. Most neighbors grow greenery, creating a quiet, village-like charm. What delighted us most was the presence of a mature starfruit tree in the front yard. From that moment, the house had a name, “3Gang House,” inspired by the Vietnamese folktale “Eat starfruit, repay with gold, sew a bag three handspans wide...”.

Built on a narrow plot, the 3Gang House resembles a “three-handspan bag” custom-tailored to fit a lifestyle of working, living, relaxing, and experiencing, all within one compact space. Arranged over three compact levels, the house provides adaptable spaces for the family’s evolving life. The ground floor merges the kitchen and dining areas into a communal core, with a motorcycle workshop near the entrance...

aura architecture studio: A west-facing residence in Rohtak, Haryana, negotiates the pressures of climate, privacy and material permanence through a considered architecture of brick, void and filtered light.

CONCEPT & CONTEXT

In the agrarian flatlands of Rohtak, Haryana, belonging is earned through material, proportion and the quiet refusal to impose. The Red Brick House, a 5,200-square-foot residence on a west-facing plot, is built on precisely that premise. In a landscape shaped by dust, heat and seasonal extremes, brick is the only honest answer: durable, almost entirely self-sufficient, and so native to this ground that it seems less chosen than inevitable.

DESIGN INTENT

Building in fired clay grounds the house in a regional tradition of thermal-mass construction, where the wall functions not as a barrier but as a climatic instrument, absorbing heat during the day and releasing it gradually through the night. There is no applied ornament. The architecture earns its presence through material honesty. The house is oriented along a west-east axis, with the primary facade addressing the street to the west and the rear elevation opening to the east. On the north and south flanks, building mass is selectively removed to introduce punctures that draw natural light deep into the plan...
