What are the physical characteristics you look for when buying a dairy ?
A good dairy cow has specific physical (visible) traits that show it can produce a lot of milk efficiently and stay healthy. Hereβs how to recognize one:
1. Body Shape (Dairy Character)
Wedge-shaped body (narrow in front, wide at the back)
Long, lean bodyβnot too fat
Sharp (angular) appearance rather than blocky
π This shows the cow uses energy for milk, not fat storage.
2. Udder (Most important part)
Large but not fleshy
Well attached (firmly held, not hanging loosely)
Soft and elastic when touched
Four well-spaced teats of medium size
π A good udder = high milk production potential.
3. Ribs and Barrel
Ribs should be wide apart and well sprung
Deep barrel (big stomach area)
π Indicates ability to eat a lot of feed (important for milk production).
4. Backbone and Frame
Straight and strong back
Prominent hip bones (not hidden by fat)
π Shows strong structure and dairy nature.
5. Legs and Feet
Strong, straight legs
Good hooves (not cracked or deformed)
π Supports movement and long productive life.
6. Skin and Hair
Thin, loose, and soft skin
Smooth, shiny hair coat
π Sign of good health and proper feeding.
7. Eyes and General Appearance
Bright, alert eyes
Active and calm behavior
π Healthy cows produce more milk.
8. Milk Veins
Large, visible, and winding veins under the belly
π Indicates good blood flow to the udder (important for milk production).
Simple Summary:
A good dairy cow is:
Lean, not fat
Has a big, well-shaped udder
Has strong legs and large body capacity
Looks healthy and active
