SUCCESS FOR EVERYONE
Recall I wrote about the fall of Mourinho and the lessons that we must learn from his sacking from Chelsea.
Today I write about the Mourinho of Manchester United (Man u). Same man. In a different club. But still showing he is world class. You may not like his style. But boy, he sure knows how to win strategic trophies. After Man U won Europa league last night, the London Telegraph described Mourinho as a "serial trophy hunter". Same paper said Mourinho is "the third coach in history to win a major European trophy with three different clubs." That's success.
My interest as usual is in the analysis. I also expect critical and emotional reverts because football is embedded with emotions. But as a pastor and an analyst I will risk the analysis nonetheless.
Lesson number 1. There is MORE THAN ONE WAY to achieve success. Man U has a ticket to play in prestigious Champions league next season without making the top four. Man U left the traditional route and went through the unconventional way. If you are not succeeding in your life today please consider other ways different from the usual. Be different. Do what others are not doing in so far as it is moral and legal.
Lesson 2. REFUSE TO BE DISCOURAGED.A day before the final match , disaster befell the city of Manchester. The spirits of Man U players could have been dampened . Instead they said they were determined to win the trophy for those that lost their lives. Convert your frustrations into strength. Let your discouragements spur you to victory. Let your problems become stepping stones to your miracles. Let your pains and failures ginger you into more action to reverse bad news. Everything works together for good for those that love God
Lesson 3 : WE CAN ALL SUCCEED. There is room to accommodate more stars in the skies. Look up. There is space. Mourinho parted ways with Chelsea and was hired by Man U. Chelsea are champions of England and are in Champions league. Mourinho and Man U are champions and also in the Champions league. Both are successful. Sometimes it's good to separate Paul and Silas for them to be separately successful. Except for marriage (Which God says must never be dissolved by Man) every partnership or business joint venture that's filled with strife requires a deep review. Rather than fight your boss set up your own business or look for another job . Avoid conflict. You and your boss can be separately successful.
Lesson 4: YOU CAN LOSE BATTLES AND STILL WIN THE WAR. Mourinho saw that fighting for a top four in EPL would be tough. He deliberately fielded weak second rated teams to play Arsenal and the last two games. He preserved core members of the elite team for the finals of Europa. He lost to Arsenal. He played a funny draw. But He knew where he was going. He did not want to win small battles and lose the war. He lost some battles and won the war. That's strategic thinking . God's word says what shall it profit a man if he wins the world and loses his soul. Pursue eternal life. It's more important than 100 years on earth. You may suffer today for doing good. You may lose promotions for refusing to compromise . But you will laugh last.
Finally NEVER PLACE YOUR TRUST ON MAN. Mourinho bought Zlatan Ibrahomovic. We all know he is a prolific striker and the highest paid player in the premier league . Where is Zlatan today?. He is out for six months. Yet Man U still won without him. Nobody is indispensable. The team is more important than one star. As good as Messi is, he cannot defend and serve as goal keeper and still be a striker. Respect members of your team even if you are a star . Respect team members in the family, office and church. Everyone is differently gifted and believe me someone can do what you are doing.....And even better. Let's be humble.
In conclusion I confess that there is room at the top. The top is not narrow . It's potentially wide elastically. If you are strategic and tenacious and humble and do things differently and be a team player while working by the rules, room will made for you at the top.WE CAN ALL SUCCEED. SEE YOU AT THE TOP. GOD BLESS YOU REAL GOOD.
