Domestic terrorist groups and lone wolf terrorists
Adverse effects of terrorism by large terrorist groups witnessed more funds being allocated to the military for interventions, intelligence and law enforcement. Also, terrorism of large magnitude has seen the growth of intervention by private securities. Department of Homeland Security (2017) examined that as more loopholes being sealed for large-scale terrorist attacks, lone-wolf terrorists have emerged causing further threats to the society and becoming a challenge to security agencies. Research has established different characteristics in terrorist groups and lone-wolf terrorists. According to Taylor and Swanson (2016), terrorist groups are composed of several people with the same ideology and working together to cause terror domestically or internationally. Studies have also established that while terrorist groups cause attacks of largest magnitude lone-wolf terrorists do not target a wide-scale attack. Teich (2013) argued that the difference is that terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda have the resource to plan and coordinate a large-scale attack.
On the other hand, lone-wolf terrorists are ideologically and fundamentally influenced to carry out attacks independently (Taylor & Swanson, 2016). Generally, lone-wolf terrorists do not follow any her hierarchal structure. Terrorist groups have organization structure with an extensive network and follow commands from their leaders (Taylor & Swanson, 2016). For instance, before his death, Osama Bin Laden used to be the top leader of Al Qaeda and approved attacks before being carried out. Research has shown that there is an increase in lone wolf terrorism domestically and internationally due to their success rates and high fatalities cause by terrorists (Teich, 2013). At domestically level local terrorist usually attack people from countries they do not agree with in ideological perspectives. An example of domestic lone-wolf terrorism is the Oklahoma City Bombing. Internationally lone-wolf terrorist have crossed borders to carry out attacks in other countries. Emergency Management Agency (2011, p.1) claimed that home grown terrorist are likely to increase in future particular in the US, Canada and Mexico due to the growing radicalization.
