Community Health Partners Kenya
CHP Kenya, in partnership with CMF, is a NGO committed to providing quality healthcare and health education to the local Maasai communities in East Africa.
Community Health Partners (CHP) is a Kenyan faith-based organization focused on improving community health through partnerships and local engagement. They're involved in initiatives like healthcare access, health education, and community development. CHP uses the local church as an entry point for its activities, especially in low-resource setting communities. They also partner with international organisations to reach the unreached, combining healthcare, spreading the good news of Jesus, livelihoods support, and community social development. CHP measures impact through indicators like people reached, reduced morbidity and mortality, and improved livelihoods. They track impact on people using prevention health indicators and adherence to treatment, especially in chronic care on life-saving medical management. CHP supports patients through home visits, mobile health, and precounselling, leveraging local expertise and no language barriers to build trust and credibility. CHP works on two fronts: health sites providing clinical services, and community services focusing on outreach, education, and support. CHP operates four health facilities with diagnostic capabilities, and their performance has led to strong partnerships with government and other non-profit actors. CHP benefits from mentoring by local medical experts and international visiting specialists from universities abroad, medical teams, and partner churches from the USA. CHP achieves its vision and mission through partnerships, both local and international, that align with their values. All activities are guided by standard operating procedures to ensure quality and consistency 🌟.
A 16-year-old male was involved in a wildlife encounter while herding cattle in Maasai Mara. He was initially attacked by an elephant, escaped, and subsequently injured by a buffalo, sustaining a puncture wound to the right groin.
The patient was rushed to CHP Aitong Health Centre, where he received immediate medical attention. An X-ray was conducted at CHP Talek Health Centre, and the patient underwent surgical intervention, including multiple layers of stitches.
The patient is currently receiving care and is expected to recover. The prompt response of the community and the medical team at CHP Aitong Health Centre contributed to the successful management of the incident. We appreciate the efforts of the CHP Aitong Health Centre staff for their timely and effective intervention.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of human-wildlife conflicts in the region, where communities live in close proximity to wildlife habitats. Such attacks are not isolated, and underscore the need for continued efforts in promoting coexistence and implementing effective mitigation strategies.
CHP Health Facilities are equipped to handle such emergencies, with qualified and licensed medical personnel of different cadres available 24/7. A referral system is in place for further management when needed, supported by an emergency standby 4-wheel drive vehicle equipped for patient transportation, stationed at Mararianta Health Centre.
