Hero Recognition: John Kim (Kim ama Waflora)

Every great story has its heroes, and for FOCUS, one of those heroes is none other than John Kimani, famously known as Kim ama Waflora.

Over 25 years ago, Kim and a few young dreamers in Ruiru came together—not with money or fancy offices—but with a passion for theatre. What started as a small traveling drama group quickly transformed into something bigger: Theatre for Development. At the height of the HIV and AIDS crisis, Kim and his team used the stage as their classroom, teaching, entertaining, and inspiring young people with life-saving messages.

But Kim didn’t stop at the stage. He and his colleagues looked around their community and saw orphans and vulnerable children who needed love, food, and education. That’s how the daycare and support center was born—the very foundation that has grown into what we now proudly call FOCUS. Imagine this: more than 25 years later, our daily feeding program at Githunguri Primary is still running strong, serving hundreds of thousands of hot, delicious meals since then, to children who might have gone hungry. Kim was part of that beginning. 💪🍛

Through the years, Kim wore many hats—peer educator, community leader, church youth leader, home-based care provider—you name it. He was always at the frontlines of service, and his energy was contagious. Many of today’s life-changing FOCUS programs, like PEPEA (which now equips thousands of boys and girls with life skills and hygiene packs), trace their roots back to the peer education movement Kim championed.

Today, Kim is miles away in France, but his impact is felt both here at home and abroad. He has reinvented himself as an Agent and Brand Ambassador for companies such as Equity Bank, Birdview Insurance, Nyota Njema Real Estate, Diaspora Properties, Lemfi, and more. He is also an events organizer, bringing Kenyans in France together through annual summer barbecues, East African football tournaments, and even the monthly Swahili Mass in Paris (now that’s unique! 🙌).

And because he can’t stop giving, every December on his birthday, Kim rallies support for vulnerable families in Kenya—a tradition he has kept for over a decade. Hundreds of families have felt the warmth of his generosity, proving that true heroes don’t just celebrate themselves; they celebrate others.

Kim himself says, “FOCUS gave me a good foundation. The passion to care for others and support the community was instilled in me in the early 2000s when we birthed FOCUS. I am forever grateful.”

As we celebrate John Kimani, we celebrate a man who helped plant a seed that has grown into a mighty tree—one that now shelters thousands through education, feeding programs, mentorship, and hope. His story reminds us that service has no borders. From Ruiru to Paris, Kim continues to embody what FOCUS stands for: compassion, vision, and action.

Hongera Kim! Your journey proves that when service is at the heart of what we do, the impact lasts for generations. Katuosis Trucking Joachim Wangui PEPEA mentorship

HEROES SERIES | FOCUS CELEBRATES JOAKIM MWANGI aka KATUOSIS THE TRUCKING GUY
From Donkey Loads in Ndula to Driving 70ft Trucks Across America 🇰🇪➡️🇺🇸

For the past few weeks, we’ve been honouring the remarkable men and women who have walked with us – heroes molded by FOCUS. And today, we bring you a story that will make you laugh, cry, and above all, believe in the power of resilience, hope, and community.

Today, we celebrate JOAKIM MWANGI WANGUI, fondly known as KATUOSIS THE TRUCKING GUY – a name that now echoes across the highways and valleys of the United States of America.

But his journey didn’t begin with diesel engines and roaring highways.
It began with a donkey. 🐴 Yes, you read that right – a humble, dusty-footed donkey.

Humble Beginnings
Born in the semi-arid heartlands between Central and Eastern Kenya, in a tiny village called Ndula, Joakim grew up in a home of two children. Life wasn’t easy – it was dusty, dry, and demanding. From Ndula Primary to trekking kilometres to Ngoliba Secondary, he knew struggle firsthand.

After high school, while others dreamt of offices and college gowns, Joakim started his first “transport company” – with his loyal donkey as his fleet. He delivered firewood, water, manure, and sometimes even helped families relocate – becoming the original ‘Katuosis Movers Ltd.’ – one donkey load at a time!

And here's the kicker – how he managed to balance mattresses, jikos, sufurias, and chicken on a donkey cart while standing just 3 feet tall, only God knows! 🙃 The villagers often laughed, sometimes mocked, but Joakim never stopped. Because deep inside him was a burning dream, and a resilience the world couldn't measure. 💪

A Stage of Possibility
Then came the game-changer.

His uncle, impressed by what Focus was doing in empowering youth, introduced Joakim to our community. And after a memorable audition, Joakim joined FOCUS Youth Group – where his world and ours changed forever.

He wasn’t just a good actor – he was phenomenal. The 3-foot tall man would take on the role of a child with such ease, wit, and humour that audiences couldn't believe he wasn’t really a 10-year-old. His energy lit up every room. His courage uplifted every soul.

And Joakim’s super talent in acting soon became undeniable. He began featuring in major local TV programs as an actor, appeared in commercial adverts, and even helped launch a television series dedicated to stories of people with dwarfism – a first in Kenya and a major cultural milestone.

He became not only a performer but also a powerful advocate, breaking stereotypes and opening space for representation that had never existed before.
Soon, Joakim became a star in our drama troupe, a trainer of trainers, a facilitator, and a community educator. He wasn’t just acting – he was inspiring. And through his visibility and popularity, Joakim realized he had a responsibility bigger than himself.

Changing the Narrative
Using the platform he built, and with full backing from FOCUS, Joakim birthed the Short Stature Society of Kenya (SSSK) – the first of its kind in the country.

For the first time, hundreds of individuals with dwarfism felt seen, heard, and celebrated.

They ran programs, formed a football team (yes, and they’re competitive too! ⚽), held nationwide forums, and hosted media campaigns. He took the sting out of stigma. He turned shame into pride. He turned exclusion into empowerment.

And soon, their work caught the attention of their counterparts in the U.S. – Little People of America. They shared best practices, conducted medical camps, and began a powerful journey of cross-cultural empowerment. This global exposure gave birth to an even bigger vision – Little People of Africa – with none other than Joakim as its founding president.

The Trucking Guy – A Global Inspiration
But just when you thought the story peaked, Joakim flipped the script again.

Today, Joakim is not just in America – he is criss-crossing U.S. states behind the wheel of a 70ft-long truck. The same boy who never drove a car in Kenya (other than his donkey cart), is now piloting giant machines across thousands of miles – a feat even many 6-foot men fear!

Imagine that!
👉 From donkey in Ndula to diesel engines in Denver.
👉 From Ngoliba Secondary to Miami, Florida.
👉 From being looked down on to being looked up to across continents.

He is now a provider, a global voice, and a mentor to hundreds of youth and individuals living with dwarfism.

The Power of Focus – A Community That Believes
Joakim’s story is not just his alone – it is a testament to the power of community, the impact of inclusion, and the unmatched beauty of believing in people.

✔ FOCUS didn’t give him height. But it gave him hope.
✔ We didn’t buy him a truck. But we gave him a stage.
✔ We didn’t remove the odds against him. But we gave him the tools to beat them.

And Joakim – oh Joakim – he ran with it. 🏃‍♂️
He is now a beacon, a trailblazer, a superstar, and today, one of our most honoured heroes.

WE CELEBRATE YOU, KATUOSIS!
To Joakim Mwangi Wangui – you made us laugh, cry, cheer, and believe.

You taught us that you don’t need to be tall to rise high.
You proved that a big heart always wins.

And today, we celebrate you not just for who you are, but for how you've lifted others.

Keep driving, keep shining, and never forget –
once a FOCUS hero, always a FOCUS hero.

KATUOSIS THE TRUCKING GUY – WE SALUTE YOU!

From Tears to Triumph: The Inspiring Journey of Mary Njeri — Now Mama June

In Ruiru Githunguri village, over two decades ago, a little five-year-old girl named Mary Njeri Waithaka walked through the gates of Focus for the very first time. She carried no school bag, only a heavy heart — the kind that comes from never knowing the love of a mother, for hers passed on while giving her life.

Mary was welcomed and raised by her grandmother — the strong and selfless Cucu ya Gaceri, as she was lovingly called at Focus. Cucu toiled in coffee plantations for years to provide the basics. Life was difficult, but even in those tough moments, Focus chose to stand in the gap — and Mary became one of us.
The Seed of Hope

Mary may have arrived vulnerable, but what we saw in her was unmistakable: pure potential.

She joined Githunguri Primary School, and from day one, she was surrounded by a community of love and radical compassion — young, unemployed but visionary youth who, though they had no money, gave everything they had: their time, energy, and heart.
They:Delivered hot meals to the school every day

Made home visits to check on her well-being

Brought food rations to support the family

Offered after-school tuition and mentorship

They didn’t give because they had much — they gave because they believed. They believed that education is the equalizer, the key that unlocks futures and breaks cycles of poverty. For Mary, that belief became a lifeline.

From Vulnerability to Victory

Mary never missed school due to lack of school fees. She later joined Our Lady of Fatima Kiriko Girls, where, with support from Focus volunteers and generous sponsors, she excelled.

Her determination carried her forward into college, where she pursued a Diploma in Orthopedic and Trauma Medicine and a Certificate in Public Health. True to her resilient spirit, Mary then started a small business to support both herself and her aging grandparents.

She later joined Food for Education, playing a part in ensuring other children received the same nourishment and care she once relied on. Her journey came full circle — from being served to serving others.

Now, She’s Mama June

Today, Mary is not the small, vulnerable girl who once needed a hand. She is Mama June — a loving, present, and purposeful mother to her beautiful daughter, June.

Though currently not working so she can care for her child, Mary is ready to re-enter the workforce. She is actively seeking opportunities to support her daughter and care for her only remaining guardians — her elderly grandparents who once gave her everything.

On a recent visit, the Focus team witnessed a powerful sight: Mary, with her medical knowledge and kind heart, now caring for her ailing grandfather, just as he and Cucu once cared for her. A full circle of love. That is the true fruit of community. That is the true meaning of transformation.

A Heartfelt Appeal

Mary’s story is one of resilience, grace, and gratitude. It is also a tribute to the many unsung heroes — the unemployed youth who stepped up with heart, the sponsors who gave generously, and the teachers and mentors who never let go.

She is living proof that education breaks the poverty cycle, that love heals, and that communities can raise greatness from humble beginnings.

But today, Mary needs a hand.
She is actively looking for a job — in healthcare, public health, caregiving, or any field where she can grow and continue to give back.

If you or someone you know can connect her to an opportunity, you won’t just be helping her — you’ll be reigniting a legacy of hope that began in pain, grew in love, and is now anchored in purpose.

Mary Njeri — from Gaceri’s little girl to Mama June. A story of hope, healing, and the power of community.
