Won this book at the conference last night. This was especially cool since I’d attended the author talk at the conference and thought it was absolutely awesome. What stuck in my mind from that talk is how we, writers 1) have to be our own cheerleaders 2) have to have iron stomachs, 3) be ok with the fact that our demons will never go away entirely but they can be sort of subdued or dealt with in a better way and 4) come up with a phrase you tell yourself to diffuse huge unpleasant feelings (fear, imposter syndrome etc.)

I had a blast at the discussion I led yesterday on writing about your own (or someone else’s) culture. The attendants were fantastic - so engaged, made such interesting comments, and were open to writing and sharing. A session that was meant to last an hour and a half lasted about TWO hours and a half and was very intellectually stimulating and fun. I want to thank everyone who came and trusted me with guiding this talk and for inviting me to do it. What a fun session!

I just finished reading this book. Well, it wasn’t reading as much as it was this sort of ravenous devouring. I am in awe of Margaret Atwood. The woman’s mind is just something else mashala mashala. Now having said that, I noticed how when you take a step back and absorb the whole of the book and the whole of your experience as a reader, you realise there were some things you didn’t particularly enjoy. I hated the historical description part at the end of this novel just like I hated it at the end of A Handmaid’s Tale. It takes us out of that fictional world and into tedious descriptions and explanations and what feels like a phoney/contrived interaction between audience and speaker. I still loved the book - really edge-of-your-seat reading and of course her use of imagery and the creativity in her prose is just ... Wow. I mean as a writer myself I had to just pause and pull myself out of the story line to take note of and admire how she wrote or described something.
