Genes Play a Role in Why We Love Music
A large twin study has shown that the ability to enjoy music—referred to as music reward sensitivity—is partly influenced by genetics.
Researchers found that 54% of the variability in music enjoyment among Swedish twins could be attributed to genetic differences.
Using data from over 9,000 twins, the study distinguished genetic factors for music enjoyment from those for general reward sensitivity or musical perception skills.
The findings reveal that the pleasure we get from music is not solely dependent on our ability to hear pitch or rhythm, but also on distinct emotional and social genetic pathways.
For example, some genetic traits may enhance emotional regulation through music, while others influence rhythmic movement or communal music-making.
This research deepens our understanding of the biology behind musical pleasure and sheds light on the uniquely human experience of music.
