A recent study done in Türkiye and published in BMC Psychology showed how people rationalize consumption of meat and other animal products through the “4Ns”: Natural, Necessary, Normal, and Nice.
The researchers linked these rationalizations to attitudes like social dominance orientation, speciesism, and masculinity.
On top of this, another research conducted at Istanbul University in 2019 examined how male athletes perceive meat as indispensable to performance, reflecting entrenched ideals of strength, dominance, and virility.
These studies together reveal how the food we eat is shaped by norms and cultural narratives, and meat continues to be seen as a marker of identity and power. Learn more: https://www.middleeastvegansociety.org/blog/meat-masculinity-and-justification-insights-from-recent-studies-in-turkey
Every year, more than 85 billion land animals—and trillions of fish—are killed for food. These aren’t natural cycles of survival; they are human-made systems of domination and cruelty. It’s unnecessary, driven not by need but by profit and entrenched habits. Built on money and blood, this industry thrives while sentient beings are cut short, their voices silenced, their lives denied. And with every purchase, you perpetuate it. www.choosecompassion.net
