Arangala (Nalanda Rock) - අරංගල 💚👣



Arangala is a popular hiking spot situated on the Kandy – Jaffna Highway in Naula. The mountain received its name ‘Arangala’ due to its shape resembling ‘arungal’, meaning earrings. This mountain is also popularly known as ‘Nalanda rock’ due to its location in close proximity to Nalanda village. Arangala has historical importance related to Weera Keppetipola and Gongale Goda Banda, who formed their troops at this mountain. There are three peaks in the Arangala, and the highest peak is about 750 meters high.

Dehena Ella Falls is an impressive 73m in height and its source is a small spring called Gaslabu Ella. The stream, known as Dehena Dola, flows from Perya Udagama on Dehena Mountain and cascades in twin chutes from the plain of Udaamunatenna. Afterwards the water flows via Pandola to the Bambarakotuwa River. A small opening in the stone at the base of the pool near the fall is called ‘Gathula’, meaning ‘inside of the stone’. It is said that during heavy rain, the caves surrounding the fall are totally submerged and the road becomes obscured by mist. However, during dry spells the flow is languid. The land towards the top of the fall has been denuded for timber and tea plantations, which has caused the depletion of aquifers.
