Maryland County Fire Service Station Falling Apart.
HARPER, Maryland County β The Liberia National Fire Service station on Green Street in Harper is in very bad condition. It has been like this for years, and firefighters are struggling to do their work.
Major Nathaniel Williams, the County Commander, took charge in January 2019. He said the building was already bad when he arrived. "The only reason it has lasted this long is because of the minor patching I've been doing myself."
When it rains, officers cannot use their offices. "Officers are unable to occupy their offices and are forced to sit on the porch to conduct their work," Commander Williams said.
He has told the central office and county leaders about the problems many times, but nothing has changed.
The station has three big problems: not enough fire equipment, limited vehicles for officers, and the urgent need to fully renovate the building.
The station serves more than 21,000 people in Maryland County. Without quick fixes, emergency help could suffer badly.
Commander Williams is asking the national government and aid groups for fast help. "We are ready to serve the people of Maryland County, but we need adequate facilities to operate from," he said. "I urge the central government and our partners to help us renovate this building so we can continue to protect lives and property effectively.
