LEC Clarifies Cause of Temporary Power Disruption; Assures Public of Its Commitment to Improving Electricity Supply

Monrovia, Liberia – January 20, 2026: The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) wishes to inform the public that the recent abrupt power disruptions experienced in parts of the country were not due to inadequate electricity supply, nor has LEC reached any critical stage of load shedding.

The interruptions experienced over the last few days, including today’s disruption, resulted from abrupt trips on the Côte d’Ivoire–Liberia–Sierra Leone–Guinea (CLSG) Transmission Line, which serves as the regional interconnected electricity backbone linking the four countries. When such trips occur on the CLSG network, they generate system feedback into local substations. To protect critical equipment and prevent extensive damage, LEC’s automated protection systems are designed to immediately shut down affected components.

LEC assures the public that this protective response is a standard and necessary safety mechanism to safeguard infrastructure and ensure system reliability.

Following the incident, LEC’s technical teams promptly intervened, and power is being successfully restored to affected areas. Normal operations have since resumed.

The Liberia Electricity Corporation sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience this temporary disruption may have caused and reassures the public of its continued commitment to the reliable provision of electricity across the country. LEC remains steadfast in strengthening its systems and collaborating with regional partners to enhance grid stability.

Monrovia, Liberia- December 5, 2025:
The Management of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) informs the public and its valued customers that the Corporation experienced a total system blackout at approximately 5:41 AM resulting from a CLSG transmission line trip on the regional interconnection network.

As part of our immediate system-protection response, all distribution feeders were temporarily de-energized to safeguard LEC’s infrastructure and prevent further network instability. Our technical teams are gradually re-energizing affected feeders to restore power supply to impacted communities.

Our Operations and Maintenance Teams are working diligently, in collaboration with the CLSG technical team, to identify the root cause and restore supply within the shortest possible time. Customers are kindly urged to remain patient as systematic restoration efforts continue to ensure network stability and public safety.

LEC regrets any inconvenience this unplanned outage may cause and assures the public of its continued commitment to delivering reliable and efficient electricity services across its network.
