For centuries English imperial influence was prevalent in Maldives although internal prerogative always remained with our 'Radhun' according to HCP Bell (Suood, 2014). As we welcome our 53rd Independence Day, here's a look at how we became a "British Protectorate" in 1887 in the first place, 77 years before Independence in 1965. In 1932 our first written Constitution reiterated the British Crown's "holy" or "Maai vegenvaa" status.
