Understanding the Hidden Weight of Debt on Mental Health
On Friday afternoon, I took time to review one of our case files: records of individuals who have bravely come forward seeking help due to financial distress. These are men and women burdened by debt (Ngongole) and informal or high-interest loans, often known as loan shark arrangements (Katapila). Some have also been deceived by scammers and are now being asked to repay money they no longer have.
After carefully compiling the figures, the total outstanding amount stands at MK103,000,000.00 (One Hundred and Three Million Malawi Kwacha). This is not just a number, it represents sleepless nights, loss of peace, broken relationships and in some cases, lives pushed to the edge
Financial pressure, especially from unregulated lending systems, is becoming a silent driver of stress, anxiety, depression and even su***de.
At Tibe Khonde Mental Health, we are committed to walking alongside individuals facing such challenges. However, this reality also brings us face to face with a difficult truth: the need is overwhelming and our resources are limited.
Every person who comes to us carries a story that is urgent, heavy and deeply personal.
We understand that some people who come to us and leave without financial assistance may feel disappointed or think that we do not help. Others may not want to fully explore the root of their problem and instead focus only on receiving money.
We do help and we will continue to help within our capacity. Our approach is guided by sustainability and responsibility. If we stretch beyond what we can't manage, we risk collapsing the very support system that many people depend on.
In trying to help everyone at once, we may end up unable to help anyone at all including ourselves.

A New Chapter for Happiness M***a.
Today marks a truly life-changing moment as Happiness M***a steps into a new chapter of dignity, mobility and renewed hope.
Tibe Khonde Mental Health had the honour of handing over a wheelchair to Happiness, a 22-year-old young woman born with disabilities. Her journey has been one of resilience and courage. At just 13 years old, she was abandoned and later found refuge at an orphanage in Ndirande.
Despite these hardships, Happiness never lost her desire for a better life. Through Facebook, she came across Tibe Khonde Mental Health and in what can only be described as perfect timing, she later met one of our members, Phillip Mkandawire, when her church hired his vehicle for an activity. That encounter became a turning point. With remarkable courage, she shared her story how limited mobility had made life increasingly difficult, restricting her ability to participate in social and economic activities, and gradually affecting her mental health. She spoke of feeling left behind as life moved forward around her.
Her request was simple, yet deeply meaningful: a wheelchair for mobility and small business capital to support herself.
Today, we are proud to share that her request has been fulfilled. Happiness can now move freely, engage with her community, and begin rebuilding her life with dignity and purpose. In addition, we have supported her with start-up capital to help her establish a small business.
At Tibe Khonde Mental Health, we believe that mental health support goes beyond counselling and words of encouragement. It requires addressing the real-life challenges that often lie at the root of depression.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Gift of the Givers Malawi for making this possible through the provision of the Wheelchair. Your generosity has not only transformed one life, it has restored hope, dignity, and possibility.

MEN ARE SHOWING UP. AND THAT MEANS SOMETHING.
"Every time I see men gathering like this—standing up, speaking out, choosing to release what they have been carrying in silence, it means everything. Because I have been there.!!!.
In 2024, depression hit me from every direction.Left. Right. Centre. It brought me down. But in that broken space… a voice rose:“Azibambo, Tibe Khonde.”(Men, we need a safe place to rest, be heard and heal.)
And now, men are answering that call." Jeffer son Milanzie
