PHIRI WARNS PERPETRATORS OF FALSE RUMOURS OF MISSING PRIVATE PARTS

The Minister of Local Government, Ben Phiri, joined the Malawi Police Service on a community engagement operation in Nsanje and Chikwawa districts.

He says the operation is aimed at stopping the recent killings linked to false rumors of missing private parts and restoring calm in affected communities.

"As Minister responsible for Local Authorities and Unity, I visited the districts on the directive of His Excellency President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika." He revealed.

Phiri sounded clear warning that mob justice is a crime adding that any report of mob justice will lead to the arrest and prosecution of everyone involved, including entire villages that aid or conceal such acts.

The rumours have claimed seven lives of innocent people in the lower shire.

HIGH COURT BACKS ACB ON AMARYLLIS ACCOUNTS, ALLOWS HOTEL OPERATIONS TO CONTINUE

The High Court of Malawi has upheld a decision by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to keep restrictions on some bank accounts linked to the Amaryllis Hotel transaction.

In a ruling delivered on 4 May 2026, Redson Kapindu said the ACB acted within the law by preserving certain accounts as part of ongoing investigations. He explained that such measures are important to protect public interest and prevent possible misuse of funds.

However, the court also allowed the release of operational accounts used by the hotel. This decision aims to ensure that normal business activities continue without disruption.
Justice Kapindu stressed that while fighting corruption is important, authorities must also protect legitimate economic activity.

The court further confirmed that the ACB has the legal power to preserve assets and continue investigations where there are reasonable grounds.
