ZOMBA CITY COUNCIL LAUNCHES "UKHONDO NDI UDINDO WANGA" CAMPAIGN

Residents of Zomba today, May 1, 2026, came together in large numbers as the Zomba City Council officially launched the “Ukhondo Ndi Udindo Wanga” campaign, a national initiative aimed at promoting cleanliness and civic responsibility.

The event attracted a diverse group of stakeholders, including members of University of Malawi Wildlife Society, representatives from financial institutions such as Standard Bank and National Bank of Malawi, as well as officials from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development. The launch was graced by the Minister, Ben Phiri, highlighting the government’s commitment to the initiative.

Activities began with a hands-on clean-up exercise across the city. Participants were seen sweeping streets, clearing drainage systems, and collecting litter in different parts of Zomba, setting the tone for a campaign focused on practical action rather than words.

Speaking during the event, Zomba City Mayor, Christopher Jana, expressed concern over the absence of some business owners, particularly from the Asian business community. He emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining a clean city.

“Expect me to visit your shops, since you did not show up today,” he said, stressing that every stakeholder has a role to play in the success of the campaign.

The mayor further noted that the initiative follows an executive directive from the President, reinforcing the national importance of cleanliness and environmental responsibility.

He concluded his remarks by expressing gratitude to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development for its continued support to the council.

The “Ukhondo Ndi Udindo Wanga” campaign is expected to continue engaging communities across Zomba, encouraging residents and businesses alike to take ownership of their environment.

CCJP DISAGREES WITH PAS ELECTORAL COMMISSION ON KACHIFUMBU Vs. THAWALE DISPUTE

The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) UNIMA Chapter has disagreed with the decision by the PAS Society Electoral Commission to accept Mr. Kachifumbu's nomination.

The development comes after Mr. Thawale lodged a complaint with CCJP, arguing that his opponent's nomination was not submitted in time, a claim CCJP confirmed.

According to a CCJP letter signed by its Director, Yankho Chingoli, and Programs Coordinator, Thokozani Mtulisha, the PAS Electoral Commission justified its decision, stating that the candidate failed to check the deadline due to an overload of WhatsApp messages.

"The Commission received the nomination because the candidate neglected to check messages on the WhatsApp platform because of too many messages," reads in part of the statement.

The Commission further said the nomination was accepted "out of humanity."

However, CCJP maintains that accepting the late submission was outside the prescribed timeframe and is "inconsistent with the guidelines set by the Electoral Commission."

"CCJP does not in any way agree with the decision taken by the Electoral Commission and disassociates itself from that decision," reads part of the conclusion.

PAS Society elections are set for 1 May 2026, with both candidates vying for the Publicity Secretary position.

MKOLONGO ORGANISES BONDO'S SPECIAL PARADE

As part of commemorating the impact of Humble CS Bondo, Christopher Mkolongo, former UNIMA SRC Welfare Director has sponsored a special parade, set to start at 12 noon.

The parade will begin from Matiya Primary School and proceed down to the campus, accompanied by Mganda drum beaters.

Mkolongo has disclosed that the event is meant to show genuine appreciation for the impact Bondo made during his tenure.

"This not just his graduation, it a collective event for all of us. So, we have to honor him through this parade as a way of appreciating his efforts," he said.

One of the students in his final year, Chimwemwe Nkhoma commented that the event is indeed necessary, as without Bondo's efforts, current finalists would have lagged behind in their studies.
