Always trust YOUR ears. We all learn from others, and you should respect and learn from the greats in the industry. But if you try something that someone else has told you not to do, and it sounds good to YOU, listen to that instinct.

Forget tutorials. Put a plugin on the track and dial the settings back and forth from 0–100. Listen to that and see what it means to YOU before allowing someone else to tell you how to use it.

Yes, you need to know a lot of technical stuff to be a great mixer. However, as a beginner, you should focus on having fun, doing extreme things, experimenting, and learning what works for you as an artist.

Almost all the classic engineering and mixing techniques we use today were born from breaking the "rules." In reality, the only rule in mixing is that if it sounds good, IT IS GOOD.

So stop obsessing over attack and release, specific EQ settings, how many dBs you can or can't compress by, and just play. Play with reckless disregard and allow yourself to find the boundaries of what works for you.

This is my favourite editing method for natural sounding live drums. There are many valid ways to time edit drums, but this is the best way I have found to preserve the original performance. Rather than editing each individual hit, you are finding the moments that the drummer starts to rush or drag, and pushing and pulling the whole take to the right of your edits. This allows you to preserve the largest chunks of the take that are on time, and do as little editing of individual hits as possible. It may seem a little counterintuitive to move the whole unedited part of the take, rather than finding the part that is if, and cutting it on both ends and moving it. But, by editing from left to right, as if you were reading a book, it allows you to spend less time, making sure each piece fits together, and gives you the most cohesive results. I had to cut a lot out of this recording to make it three minutes, so if you would like a longer form video going into more detail, please leave a comment bellow. remember, this is not the only way to edit, this is just the best way I have personally found to make the drums on time, but not robotic, or unnatural sounding.

A little insight on how I go about recording the vocals for . I am still experimenting with all the microphones I have, and trying to find the one that I think best suits my voice. The main benefit of recording with analog compressors on the front end for me is the added confidence I get from being able to hear a more polished vocal when I monitor through my interface. You can get a similar or exact sound with plugins, but having a better sounding vocal in my headphones while recording, and not worrying about plugin latency really helps. If there is an unbeatable price of gear in this chain, it would have to be the 73 pre. Compressor plugins are amazing, and so are pre amp plugins, but I have yet to find a pre amp plugin that sounds as good as using this 73 pre at the source. They also made the OLA5 opto compressor which I am using in this video. Usually I use my wa14 on instruments. I like it a lot for brass, and for a mono drum overhead. But, I have also noticed that it sounds good on some singers, although it is not always the correct choice depending on their voice. I'm so happy to be able to record at and make music that I love.
