As a teenager I was in and out of the hospital.

I had a digestive condition that we just couldn't get a handle on. Excruciatingly painful. And since the doctors could only temporarily relieve my symptoms — never actually solve the problem — it ended up changing the entire course of my life.

One day a teacher handed me an old book. On the cover was a Sanskrit word — Svastha — which translates to Perfect Health.

I was skeptical. But I dove in.

It was a text on Ayurveda — the ancient Indian science of health and longevity developed by the great yogis thousands of years ago.

That book changed everything.

Over twenty years later, Ayurveda has become one of the great loves of my life. It showed me how to heal what the doctors couldn't. More than that, it gave me a complete blueprint for how to live — physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Here's what I've come to understand after all these years of studying and teaching it:

Most health advice is built on the assumption that all bodies work the same way...
..but they don't.

Ayurveda identified three distinct body types — called doshas — thousands of years ago. Each one has its own elemental makeup, its own strengths, its own tendencies toward imbalance, and its own specific medicine. Click here to find out which one you are, or read on.

Vata — Air and Space. The most creative person in the room — and often the most anxious. Runs cold, forgets to eat when busy, can't switch the mind off at night.

Pitta — Fire and Water. Sharp, driven, a natural-born leader — and also the one who snaps when the to-do list gets too long. Runs hot, gets inflamed under stress, holds themselves to a standard nobody else could meet.

Kapha — Earth and Water. The steady, generous one that everyone leans on — and also the one who struggles to get moving in the morning. Holds onto things longer than they should — weight, emotions, old patterns.

One of these is you.

Knowing your dosha takes the guesswork out of everything — the foods that work for your body, the herbs that actually help, the lifestyle that keeps you feeling good long term.

Today the Sun crosses the celestial equator, and day and night arrive at perfect equilibrium. Whether you're stepping into Spring or into Autumn, this moment carries the same power.
