Community Meeting, Kampung Pulau Manis 28/02/2017

17|January|2017

On January 17th 2017 a group of 3 DRR-Leaders along with several representatives from different faculties in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia went to meeting with a groups of community in Kampung Pulau Manis. And as for our team it was a first meeting with community groups in Kampung Pulau Manis as well as to present the proposal implementing the Preparedness for Disaster Risk Reduction (PRE4DRR) project, based on the need of the locals. Here i'll give a brief introduction about this village. Kampung Pulau Manis is located at the district of Pekan in the state of Pahang. Kampung Pulau Manis is one of the adopted villages of UKM. Various plans and actions were implemented by faculties and institutes in UKM to empower and develop the village. There is only one school in the village; SK Pulau Manis. There is also one community hall in the village thus the village is a relatively small village. There are about 100 families living in the village. Geographically, the village is located at a lowland area, based on GPS device shows the terrain approximately less than 60m above sea level. Kampung Pulau Manis also located in between two river which is known as Pahang river one of the main river in Peninsular Malaysia and the other one is Rasau river. Frequent flood occurrence; during the previous major flooding (Kelantan Flood) on December 2013, Kampung Pulau Manis, Pekan, Pahang was also deeply affected by the flood. Among which that were affected were 80 families living there, orphanage, kindergarten and other public facilities. In January 2015, the village experienced flood again; school was suspended again due to flood and the school was used as an temporary evacuation centre. So now, as a alumni of ASEAN Youth Volunteer Program in 2016 as well as DRR-Leaders in Malaysia our team are called to carry out volunteer work of helping raise awareness and preparedness of disaster (flood) to community particularly among youth, through our project known as PREPAREDNESS FOR DISASTER RISK REDUCTION (PRE4DRR) MALAYSIA 2017.
