Hari Raya Puasa 2026: Additional Public Holiday

The Prime Minister of Malaysia has announced an additional public holiday in conjunction with Hari Raya Puasa (Aidilfitri) 2026, giving Malaysians extra time for travel and celebrations.

Legal basis: This type of declaration is not merely a policy announcement but there is legal authority for it. Section 8 of the Holidays Act 1951 empowers the relevant authority (including the Federal Government through the Minister/Prime Minister’s announcement leading to the required formal notification) to declare public holidays by notification, in accordance with the Act.

If an employee is required to work on that public holiday: The employee should be paid public holiday rates. In general, this means double your daily pay for work done on the public holiday, and for overtime worked on that day, triple the normal overtime hourly rate (subject to your contract/collective agreement and applicable wage laws).

• Public holiday work: 2× daily pay
• Overtime on a public holiday: 3× overtime rate
